Hi, I just joined here and I've looked around a bit... I was wondering if there was a section discussing careers (successful, or common) of intp's here? I am currently an ugrad student deciding between civil engineering and going into law school. I'm guessing most intp's have trouble deciding, or sticking to one.

Yep yep. Have you seen http://intp.org/job.html ?

The trick will be finding something that you'll definantly be interested in. Anything less and you'll get bored very quickly.

absolutely.

I am currently an ugrad student deciding between civil engineering and going into law school.

I don't think that there's a general field of occupation...I'm almost finished with law school but being able to work in this field soon doesn't really excite me :P

I went to this "talent-analysis" a few months ago where they found out that I should try something with media-science (don't know if that's an actual English term...doesn't matter though as I'm not even sure yet what exactly it means in German... :D )

anyway...they told me ultimately that I was too unconventional for that field of work, at this point had understood how "it" worked and now was pretty bored as I'm not the type for the necessary repeated exercise after understanding it...
in the long run I wouldn't find THE thing to do for the rest of my life, but switch around to new jobs as the old one lost my interest...

yeeha. so I still don't know what to do... and I'm not sure if that state of mind will ever come over me... :D

I must echo this sentiment as well. In my 13 years out of college I have had many jobs...and for me, I am lucky to be able to work for a company that is large enough to allow my "personality preference" to exist, to allow me to continue learning and challenging myself.

My own hobbies change too, by the way. :D

Haha that's how I feel about going to law school too - more excited about law school itself than about seriously becoming a lawyer.

Although I change interests often, I would really like to on focus one career (or, more realistically, maybe a few) in my lifetime so I could really gain expertise (and also for financial stability - isn't it difficult when you're constantly changing jobs?) It must (I hope) be possible!

My experience is that all job's are boring. They may not start out that way, but they get that way soon enough.

So find something that doesn't cause you too much pain and that pays well. Then you can work for as few years as possible before retiring. :-)

Careers....
Hmmmm, now this is interesting.

I think the only career I'll have is in my dreams. I am a notorious job hopper.

I do like the idea of photography & journalism however. Should be difficult to be bored in these fields or better still, the combination of the two.

I plan to go to law school for fun within a few short years.

As for job, I am a person of leisure and plan to stay that way as long as possible, then hopefully someone will pay me for being brilliant.

I think I'll be a professor at college level. If I ever get anti-social I'll study and become one at university level (less contact)

I have a degree in engineering, and I went to law school.

Hated engineering with all the math. Law school much more fun. Now I am trying to combine the two - patent law. Pretty dull, and the economy is not helpful in getting me that job I want so I am a paralegal (for now).

Hopefully I can retire at some point and persue my PhD in history.

Im on my way to getting into business, marketing is what interests me the most and im sure the ever changing work will keep me interested. Also the fact that (hopefully) i can get into an area where i can churn out ideas and not have to follow them through. I can just get the workers onto it. Ideas are my strongpoint but when it comes to working on them myself i get bored and move to somthing else.

Computer Science.

I am really into art, directing plays, web/graphic design though (aside from Physics...*sigh*), but, heard you can do some cool stuff when you know how to program, so, going that route.

I'm computer Sci also. It's a huge field so there is pleny of subtopic to jump around in. The money is good. The trick is to not get stuck in one place for too long you get bored. The trick I always use is to tell my boss that I'm ready for a new "challenge". As long as you make it sound like they are not using you to your best capacity most bosses will try to get you somewhere new. Though I have made the mistake of saying my job was "boring", and getting stuck init for another 2 years because I was "too valuable"

I have found myself in jobs that were originally interesting, however, at some pont the job description changes or I found myself doing more of the duties which were not as important, or worse a supervisor leaves. At that point the job becomes drudgery.

I've had several jobs, including forest ranger, paralegal, and bookkeeper. I tend to get bored after a year or so at most jobs but I want to find something that pays well enough to motivate me to want to stay at it for a while if for nothing else to fund my real interests.
I'm thinking about going back to school for either law school or an advanced science degree, not sure which. I'm having a hard time differentating between going to school for the sake of learning new things or actually wanting to pursue a new career direction.

I think you either have something you care about greatly and leaves you with lots of breathing room or prepare for a life of going from career to career.

Of course you could just get bored stiff at any old job or marry someone rich.

It seems like a lot of the members work in computer/technology with law, science, and business as distant seconds. Is this typical?
Also, since INTPs are a group that gets bored once reaching an understanding of a topic, how many INTP's actually end up finding work in the field of their college degree?
I worked in my field for about 4 years but am looking to for a new direction now.

Law school much more fun.

Law school fun? For me, it was a real letdown after a great undergrad experience. I admit I found many of the classes somewhat interesting but the professors were arrogant and most of my fellow law students were beyond irritating. Too many of the gunner/hand-raising types. These annoying law students only get worse once they become attorneys. Most of these people even admit they didn't like law school. The only thing less fun than law school is my current litigation job.

Hopefully I can retire at some point and persue my PhD in history.

This is a good thought. I've contemplated doing the exact same thing. Except I would "retire" now and do it even though that would mean more debt. It's funny because I started off in engineering also but quit because of the math. I then switched to history.[/quote]

Yeah there were a lot of tools in law school. But I found some cool people to hang with.

Law school was more fun cause I no longer had to do 100 pages of spreadsheet formulas. Read, write, show up to class. So much easier. Better grades too.

I doubt I'd say the same if I had switched to history. I did contemplate switching to poli sci my junior year.
