Here's what the phone support will tell you to do; give it a try if you haven't.

- Shut everything down by completely removing the power. Pull the cords out of the backs of the devices if you have to.
- Power everything back up, in this order: broadboand router (DSL modem, cable modem - give them plenty of time to sync up), then your LAN hub/router, then your computers.

HTH, HAND. ;)

OMG, I'm having the exact same problem. . . logged on to here to ask for help.

I cannot log into my gmail accounts and everything is being like molasses (sorry to all on IRC last night)

I also have a wireless router and network card, but on my other computer (that's not wireless), it's doing the same thing. I thought maybe it was mozilla, so I logged into MSN, and the same thing happens. I considered the possibility that maybe someone dug up a cable or something . . . anyway it's so damn frustrating.

(TY for the info, deepsky. I'll try that).

Check your host files. DNS looks there for address resolution before consulting your specified (or assigned) dns server.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host

Sometimes spyware can change entries in that file for phishing scams etc... That could be a potential source of the problem. Rebooting and unplugging will not fix it if this is the problem...

It's not your internet, it's MINE

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that I've already run all three of my spyware-type programs . . . that was the first thing I did when it started being slow.

Well, TY deepsky. . . I can finally log into gmail, but the net is still slow. . . mainly the google-type sites, but oh well. Moving my laptop upstairs to be closer to the wireless router helps a little bit, but not much.

And speaking of wireless routers, I have a Q: How does one use WEP Encryption to secure a wireless area? For some reason, every time I try to put a password on my connection, it disconnects me from the net. I really need to read up on this stuff, but I've only had it a week. It's frustrating . ..

spyware scans do not pick up host file alterations
