View Full Version : What makes some members attention magnets?

Is it some characteristic of the member that results in an attractive force? Is it a concerted effort to acquire attention/status? Is it simply posting a lot? Post quality? Is it a sexual thing? I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps you all can help me.

I think it's a bunch of different factors. The more factors someone has, the more popular they are. Some things that come to mind:
-Gender
-Attractiveness
-Originality
-Intelligence
-Wit
-Activity
-Personal interaction

I'm not sure I see clear delineation between the two.

yeah alot of you are big dicks. I'd have to go with closet extraverts, however.

That's about 80% of it right there.

You didn't rule out bad attention, so I can give you a tip. Personal experience tells me a colorful animated avatar is the fast track to buckets of attention.

Blunt
intellectually interesting
hints their personal life is interesting
political acumen
playfulness
very good control over being pissed/ having pissed someone off
letting go of flamewars outside of their original thread
Maybe controversial:
Some sort of archetypical energy to them. Trickster Gods, Wisemen, Virgin/whores, just plain whores, robots, nerds, jokers, bunker-dwellers (characterized by YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAAAAND) and (usually women) who're looking for the Lake Isle of Innisfree.

The members who get my attention do one or more of:
make me think,
make me feel,
make me laugh.
Yes, irritation is a feeling.

Yet there are those who fit that criteria and yet they aren't 'attention magnets'.

Rabid dog foaming at the mouth knee jerk reactionary behavior seems to work.aelan, OMW, mananza, fripping, googlemonster, stuck, Helios, Rhu, Oso, MacGuffin, s0978, Ptah, bluebell, ApeTheDog and Joft are all attention-getters without that behavior. Hustler was never gentle, but never reactionary either. Well, except for the "what the fuck is wrong with you" thread, but it was warranted. All have been reactionary, few have charisma based off it.

This might just be a personal opinion but it feels that given forum activity is a bit volatile and variable at the moment, having an interesting blog helps to get you attention right now as people can read a post that piques the curiosity and then go to their blog to see a member speak with their own voice freely without too much of the tedious back and forth-ing that's goes on in the main board.
But yeah, I think I am drawn to no more than 5 blogs myself now. In the past I never gave them a second glance. In the end, people just have to have something that makes them stand out and then something that you like or don't like. Or they might have a bit of a 'cult of personality' thing going like... well, you know who.

Thanks for the tag shoutout, guys. I wouldn't have noticed it except it showed up in the vanity searches that I conduct five times a day in order to rank how popular I am. That's right. Say my name, bitches.

How does one conduct one of these "vanity searches"?

search for your username and see how many hits come up from other people.
That or pull down your pants and see if you can find it - "Oh, yes, there it is! I guess it's not so small after all!"

Other than what has been mentioned, I've noticed it has some relation to personal involvement/investment that's shown in individual posts. Either what they have to say is personally revealing and it can be seen that they are attached to it OR they respond to others in a way that is personal and brings out the other person's investment, they acknowledge and highlight the personal aspect.
Essentially, it appears that their posts actually are about something that matters to them as a person, or they make it matter to others. Without that element, having all the other traits is ineffective.

You make a good point.
Though seriously, you tend to rep people who rep you back. I know some other people use visitor messages, but I never do.
