View Full Version : Remember When Nobody Thought Limey Was Funny?

A few short years ago Limey was the pariah of INTP central. Many members and the lions share of the staff at the time went on record to say that they found his banter to be boring, offensive and pointless. Hustler stepped down from his administrative duties to continue his personal crusade to have Limey banned. Fluffy Clouds, who is no longer with us, was forced to post from inside of Rajahs nether regions in her battle to defend Limey's honor and was subsequently banned. Tensions ran high.

I bring this up now, not to pour salt in to any old wounds, but because Im truly curious as to why things seem to be different now. Today Rhu was voted as the funniest poster, but Limey came in a close second. Many people respect and enjoy his humor and he is a valuable part of the forum. Has Limey changed his posting style drastically, or has the zeitgeist of the forum simply changed as newer members have come along and the old guard and old cliques have changed?

I just read some of Limey's posts from that time because I wasn't an active member then. His early posts strike me as much more uptight and pompous than his current posts where he's silly and nonsensical. Maybe there was an intermediary time where he was, like Stella, trying to find his groove and pissed off the community.

I'll go on record to say that I used to think Limey was a shit, but now he seems pretty funny and decent. I think his posting style changed.

I'll say that the first person who adopted a positive attitude to Limey was OMW.

I have wondered why I never said anything against Limey back when he was more offensive. 'Just didn't.

I suppose. This is the metaforum after all. We don't really stand on ceremony around here. Consider this an invitation to say what you want about anything.

However, this isn't some sort of circuitous manipulation intended to swing public opinion. I think the record will show that I personally have always enjoyed his humor.

I didn't pay attention to all of the drama going on around him back when it did. I have come to like him now.

As for funny... I hardly laugh at anything on this forum (it lacks spontaneity) but his NSFW contribution to the fluffy animal thread managed it for me.

It does cause one to second guess oneself when banning potentially hilarious members such as Miserable or pelch.

I guess I could try explaining the humor to you next time he makes a joke, but nothing kills a joke faster than dissecting it and there's no reason for both of us to be unamused.

Those that find Limey funny are almost guaranteed Fs.

I think he only have unresolved issues, and is very sensitive about it, and is asking for help. Maybe that is what is funny? I prefer to take cases like this seriously, and try to help. But that's just me.

Ah, very interesting.

I was completely oblivious to forum politics until I became a madmin (oh, the good old days...), so I didn't have the chance to form a particularly good or bad opinion of Limey. None of his 'problematic' posts were directed at me, and I honestly hadn't noticed his supposed attacks and/or problems with other members, especially the madmin. I had taken a six-month break from INTPc which ended a month or two before I was asked to be a mod, so I may not have even been around for all the Limey drama. Anyway when I was welcomed into the fold there was talk of him in the modbox that I was genuinely unable to understand from a personal, subjective standpoint. Objectively, sure, but it was only after I went back and specifically looked for it.

I didn't intentionally champion Limey, I just didn't have a negative past with him. I blame it all on ignorance, and the fact that I tend to be well-liked by the Brits here (according to my own skewed observations, anyway).

edit: As far as the 'Funniest Member' category is concerned, I didn't vote in it this year because there are too many people here who are funny in different ways for me to be able to compare them and come up with a winner.

Yes, that's a nice way of putting it. Often I even get the impression that Limey isn't a sexist and racist(as explained). And this is his way of showing displeasure(twisted as it may be). So I don't have a problem with him, even if I might be the butt end of his jokes sometimes, and considering me being the third hottest chick and all :) , I can't really fault him. Even flattered sometimes, although he does go over board now and then. But I guess that's to be expected with horny guys.

So to put this in clear text.
It's fine if he is being gentle, but not if he is being rough. That's when he is in need of guidance(first post).

The majority of people claimed to have understood 70-90% of what Limey says... If we assume people are feigning understanding, we could possibly knock this down a bit.

Regardless, most people don't understand close to everything he says.

I understand most of it, except when he lapses into USA centric observations in which case I sometimes do not get the references. I am from the same city, the same age, and have a similar working class upbringing. I guess that gives me an advantage over most here - I do not always find him funny, but I do usually understand what he means.

Fair enough Mac - I was never a target for his wit, or am so daft I am oblivious to it. A lot of the time when people get offended here I can't see why, which probably doesn't say much for my 'F' skills whatever the third most desirable woman* on the site may assert.
