View Full Version : Night owls and morning people

I'm curious as to the ratio of night owls to morning people here, and whether it affects your home life.

I'm pretty much hardwired to be a night owl, but I was married to a monring person, both my parents are morning people, and one of my sisters is the biggest morning person I know. One of my other sisters will grow up to be a night owl (she's 14 and already acts like one) and my other sister can do either, depending on her work schedule.

I never seem to tired until early morning -- 5 to 7 AM, which means I sleep very late and get branded as a bit of a layabout. Which is true, I guess.

It depends, I woke up at 3 am today, I can do either.

I am a night owl. I can get up in the morning if I have to. I don't even drink coffee. But I prefer to stay up late.

If other INTP's are like me, they probably have a hard time getting the brain to shut (up) off at night. It keeps going and going and going....

So true. My head reminds me of a broken jukebox. I can't listen to any music at least an hour beforehand.

Night owl. I can get up early if I have to, but I will easily sleep till noon. I stay up till 2 or 3 am with no problem, besides, daylight is overrated.

This too was covered in the earlier one:

Basically I can't get to sleep before 4am; so my ideal would be to wake about noon, having had a decent day's sleep. I'm really most alert at 2am.

On the other hand, I could be adaptable for early morning battles if my commanders ensured no-one spoke to me too much.

I must be the only morning person here. When I was younger I was more of a night owl, but now I wake up at 5 or 6 am, and thats when I get all my housework done.

Happens to me too.

I like getting up and watching the sun come up, for the same reasons I like being up at night. It's quiet, and no one is around to bother you.

I go to bed at like 12. Wake up at like 2. Go to bed at like 4:30, and wake up at 6. That is what?

actually not really, sometimes I got to bed at like 2 and wake up at 6.

Sometimes I am going to be at 10 and waking up at 2 and the list goes on..

On Sunday I might not wake up until 8.

I have this weird phenomonon going on right now... No matter what time I stay up til, I still wake up at 7:00 AM, like clockwork. Since I'm at college... that kicks ass. All I have to do is make sure I can stay like that for the next five years, and I'm set.

Yes; seems to be bad for me, and it is causing (or is caused by) my fibromyalgia. Use cyclobenzaprine to put me down (very gentle).

Also, I wonder how much of it is that most INTPs can only get alone time after everyone else goes to sleep.

I went to high school in Alexandria, VA.

Up at 8 or 9 and asleep by 1 or 2 a.m would be optimal.

Night owl, all my life. The battles I had to wage with my parents to watch Johnny Carson, when it was 2 hours - or at least 90 minutes. And I always remember waking up at 11:55 PM. I used to think I had set my brain to wake my body up to watch Midnight Special but as I think back this was happening more than just every Friday night.

I'm at my peak creatively between 10 PM and 2 AM. If I'm working hard on a particular project or on deadline, I'm usually up until 3:30 AM. Even then, I have to force myself to go to bed because the manual override to shut my brain off is so hard to reach. I'll lie awake for another hour.

It seems like no matter what time I go to sleep, if I have to get up before 8:30 AM, I will have such an upset stomach. Late wake up can make eating kind of a bear. 11:15 AM when I'm done with my morning routine and ready to leave the house is too late for a lot of places to serve breakfast, but who can eat a burger before noon?

Am I the only morning person? My husband is an owl. I religiously go to bed at 11.00pm because I'm tired of the day and am really looking forward to leaping out of bed refreshed in the morning. In the evening, all I feel like doing is chilling with a wine, cruising the net or watching TV.
But then I have children.

This is me. I run intil the wee hours, and I literally don't go to sleep until my body is so tired that I cannot stay awake. Usually that's around 2-3am.

I used to work graveyard shift (11p-7a) in college, and I really liked the solitude. But at the same time, I think I got used to an erratic sleep schedule. I don't seem to be so devastated as others when I don't get much sleep. But then again, maybe it's the coffee. Coffee good.

no matter what time I go to bed I can't get up before noon the next day...so I tend to stay awake till 5-6 am ...and that's when I'm most productive...between 12 - 4am...I hate mornings so much that I always have suicidal tendencies right after getting up...and as the day wears out I become more energetic and buy the time it's 10 pm in the night I'm fully charged up...I'm always out of phase with others..and I get a lot of time for myself this way...helps me to do the things that I like without getting disturbed..

100% morning bird. I love getting up early (at 5:30) and enjoying that quiet stillness that permeates when everyone else is still sleeping. It's a great time to get grocery shopping done as well -- no crowds or lines. Guess I'm in the minority, though . . . I typically go to be at, like 9:30 or 10:00. When I was younger, I could do the all nighters, but no more. Okay, I'm rambling here, I'll stop.

I've been a complete night-owl in all my life. I can get up in the morning, but since I'm then in my zombie state, I cannot remember anything that happened before about 10 a.m. For example, I am usually totally unable to tell what I had for breakfast. My flatmates used to say that I'm grumpier than a disturbed bear in the mornings...I wouldn't have a clue. :D

"My" hour is around 22:00, then I'm at my best. And daylight is overrated, indeed.

Night owl my whole life. If it wasn't for my wife I would be late every day (usually am anyways).

It seems to be a function of my mind continuing to wander over everything I've done or thought about that day, without having to be interrupted by anything. Distraction-free brain liberty.

I do really like the early morning though, with it's quiet and solitude. It's just so painful to wake up. Coffee good, indeed.

I am an extreme morning person, I like to be up around two, I think best then. But I also can be a night owl as well. Either way. I'm generally pretty adaptable. I don't like bright sunlight... But that may just be a side effect of never going outside.

Errr...morning people. The only good use for them I have found so far is that they will make sure you are up, regardless of whether or not you want to be. They are the world's most annoying and persistent alarm clock, but that is good when I go somewhere and I am expected to be out of bed before 11:00.
I'm just glad that so far I've managed to schedule easy classes for first block...

Another night owl here.:hello:
Usually I stay awake until about 4 AM, even when I try to sleep it seems to be hard when it's any 'earlier' than that. I'm most alert from 10 PM to 2 AM. Whenever I get the chance I sleep until noon, so my weekends are full of catching-up on sleep from an awake school-week.
Since I know that I'm horrid when it comes to waking up in the mornings I have an unhealthy tendency to stay awake through the entire night, simply to be on time without my parents complaining. Tonight as well; 06:00 AM here.

I have been wondering over the correlation between night-owls and introverts.
I'm still like I was at school. School holidays - up bright and early, term-time - oh god. Why do I have to get up? Same with work now.
I put it down to the coming pressure of having to deal with people and regulations.

I'm not so worried about it these days, but I've always felt a great relief when it gets too late for any business to phone me (after 6pm) and then too late for anyone to phone me (after 11pm). I put that down to introversion and that leads to ekeing out that free time and hence staying up late.

Usually in bed by midnight these days and up for work at 6.30am for work though wouldn't be doing that if I was self-employed.

Ooh, old threads are fun sometimes. Reminds me of where I was at the time I wrote my original response to this thread about 1.5 years ago. So much changed.

Waking up at about 5:20 this morning, the quality of light on my wall was so subtle and beautiful. I don't even have one of those LED alarm clocks. Just your standard round hour and minute-hand clock. I tend to wake up gradually, not startled back into existence from some angry beeping machine. I don't even remember the last time I had to set an alarm.

Musings aside -- I've unearthed this poll to see if there are any other freaks of nature (like me) in these recent years of INTPdom.

Edit: I think it's true -- that whole "you need less sleep as you get older" thing. Perhaps the brain does not require as many hours of sleep? I tend to stay up later as well as get up earlier these days. But I always love the AM.

Wow, this is indeed an old one. And things have changed. I now have to be at work at 8 AM.

Doesn't change the fact that I'm up until 2 or 3 AM anyway. I require a nap when I get home, though.

I was thinking about starting a similar thread, so I am glad this was revived.

Mac's comment is very interesting, since I have created an anncetode for the late night thinking problem. I turn the fan on medium high to create white background noise, and I listen to lectures on tape with just one ear piece. It works like a charm. I am typically asleep before the hour tape is finished. And see, all you guy's in college think the boring lectures you listen to are worthless...

If I sleep from 2am to 11am, then I feel complete. I have always thought that trolling around at night fed my ant-social tendencies and my need to live outside the norm; maybe it's just another INTP thing.

Me, too. I like being awake in the very early morning hours (2AM-6AM), too, whether it's before I went to bed or just after I got up, and I do my best work then. While I still have to be a functional member of society, I go to bed around 2AM and wake up around 8AM.

I'm a natural night person but I kinda force myself to be an early riser because it makes life easier. If left in a natural sleep pattern I don't get up before 1pm and go to sleep about 5am. I go to bed at 12 now though, it's just impossible to get anything done if I sleep late and eating is a pain because after you've had 2 meals you feel like it's to late to eat.
