In !diom's thread: Attempting to outline the epic battle between good & evil raging at INTPc, I think there was the kernel of a very interesting notion as per his subjective attempt at mapping Spheres of Influence or alliances as !diom sees it. (http://www.intpcentral.com/uploads/alliances.JPG)

Adopting Hustler's idea of using the highest posting members as the foci for this experiment and augmenting the listing Oso offered by excluding one long-term inactive poster and one currently inactive poster (who has stated he plans to remain so), I have also added members down to the posting level of Rhu as follows.

MacGuffin
Delilah
Madrigal
kuranes
outmywindow
Ferrus
Ivy
Hustler
attila_the_hunny
ApeTheDog
C.J.Woolf
Limey
Jennifer
Rajah
Anonymous
Nighthawk
bluebell
Rhu

This makes for a collection of 18 foci and (inducing my own subjective notions into this) I suggest we each choose a third or 6 and only 6 members who's personas we deem to have the highest affinity or comfort level vis-a-vis ourselves.

I would offer that mapping this sort of data might prove very interesting fodder for further discussion in !diom's thread and elsewhere.

is it your intention for people to vote based solely on how we openly act/post/interact on the forum, or may we include our privately held opinions, preferences, and reactions in our assessment of whom we feel the most affinity with?

Good Question.

Any and all means by which you measure a fellow persona are valid.

Example, I have rarely interacted with MacG, but for some reason I hold him in high esteem.

Its not a popularity contest...your supposed to choose 6 people who represent different foci amongst spheres of influence whether you like them or not.

Maybe what Iddy and Maddy are seeking is different... more or less valid than this approach.

My suggestion is that simpatico should reveal persona alignments.

I was just going to choose myself and only myself, until I remembered that I irritate me, so I am going to have to give it some more thought.
Or get distracted, forget and not vote.

excellent. done.

Its not a popularity contest...your supposed to choose 6 people who represent different foci amongst spheres of influence whether you like them or not.

i agree that this should not be popularity based, but it is based on affinity specifically. i take this to mean an assessment of how much affinity is felt with the way others post, what they post, their deduced motivations or impetus, personal characteristics and overall attitude. where the most surprising affinities may be revealed, then, are where method or commitment differ.

4 members have already voted you as one of their foci...
If you shun this it's gonna skew my data.

Maybe a pint of blood will buy your participation????

NEWS FLASH: I don't see a lot of simpatico between you and I. However, I DO think you are one of the funniest people here and I often 'feel' (if you can say that here and not get castrated) empathetic towards your IRL woes.

It was a tough choice between OMW and Jennifer, as I got to #6.

Maybe it is an anal imposition to ask for an arbitrary numer equal to a third of the choices.

However, I fear if I had said "have at it", I would have had a lot of diplomatic inclusions, and point making single exclusions.

I hope in this way to assuage some of the concerns of a popularity contest as addressed by Stoph.

The easy way to balance it is just to triple the size of the original list.

No biggie, it just forces one to prioritize. My #7 and #8 were very close to the other six but obviously still not in that cluster, so...

Impossible for me to vote for just six, because I feel comfortable with people that are very different from me. Not sure on the criterion.

Mac is probably the one who is most like me personality-wise, Anon is more like me ideologically, and everything else falls between that.

Damn, Damn, Double D DDamn!!!

You see, this is why I'll prolly always be part of the lunatic fringe (the fact that I'm a lunatic not withstanding) at this meta-minded site.

I could heat & beat the mettle of this matter until I'm a dehydrated and tanned grape and we'll never manage the sort of rock-hard razor-sharp Saber of Science I'm used to.

I can weigh you out some reagents, mix them in a flask of DI water, fill a pipette, read the meniscus and tell you what I have measured within a few Parts Per Billion.

...This stuff, at best a trend suggestive of truth.

The questions are:
*** Can we make it trend more towards truth with reasonable effort?
*** What truth do we seek? What should Simpatico mean?
*** Why did the results come up: 42???

If I were to pull a max number of current users completely out my ass (Ouch), of say 200, then…

*** Will a poll support 200 radio button options?
*** Can a Mad-Min supply me with a listing of all users active during the previous week?

If we allow 10 choices per user on such a poll then the resulting connections could reach 2000.

*** Will the mapping software handle this amount of wiring?

It would be a better idea to put the poll on an outside website, which would simultaneously construct the map as people voted.

Then we could derive statistics from it and people who fall in and out of bell curves for those statistics.

It would be an interesting social experiment, if anything at all. I'm actually writing a pursuassive paper for my philosophy class(elective) against Sartre's existential ideas, with the argument that society behaves like an organism. An exercise like this would provide interesting insight.

I suggest we each choose a third or 6 and only 6 members who's personas we deem to have the highest affinity or comfort level vis-a-vis ourselves.

www.carolina.com

Despite the regional implication, you would be hard pressed not to use there supplies, reagents, kits, and live cultures in any (U.S.) high school or college biology courses up to post-doc.

I'm not sure where you wanna go with viruses and whatnot???

When I worked in a municipal water quality lab, our cultures were sent certified by the US Gov't (EPA)

If you do go with Carolina and want to get something kind of dicey, make up a fake laboratory letter head, send a snail-mail invoice and postal money order... if it is something truly dangerous, this will only get you in trouble.

I'm sorry, I worked as a Lab tech at a community college and a water lab and I'm ignorant of other suppliers.

Gene vectors for eukariotic cultures. I'm not sure if I should be messing with that though, maybe I should stick with the calcium phosphate methode. Best be safe than... altering my genetic material, becoming contagious, and being sorry.
