Sort of a tangent but the Olympics are totally screwing over British Columbia. When they had the vote to see if the residents wanted them there they were saying the cost would be roughly 1 billion but it would bring in 10 billion in economic activity. Now the real cost is up to 6 billion and the new estimate for economic activity is 1-2 billion. 800 school teachers have already been fired in the province and that's only going to be the beginning of the budget cuts to try and pay for the mess.
At least the international media attention on the nightmare that is Vancouver's Lower East Side and the fact that BC has the highest child poverty rate in Canada might get something done about it after years of just ignoring the problem.

This is true. Perhaps if they were endangered by global warming or there were large mineral deposits under the East Side or the Russians were staking a claim to BC the federal government would take notice?

While that's true, when Vancouver won the bid for Winter 2010 in 2004, I was nowhere near old enough to vote. :stupid:
And yes, it is absolutely batshit up here. I live on UBC campus (which is one of the venues). Couple that with the fact that we're university students and therefore protest absolutely anything regardless of content, it is utter chaos in this city.
I just came back from my usual 10-minute grocery run which had turned into a 2 hour fiasco. The torch relay was heading through our part of town, so all public transit had been suspended.
Not to mention for the next 16 days my school and city is going to be swarming with tourists. Given the fact that I am a student and have no car, public transit, unfortunately, is going to be my primary mode of transportation.
It's funny how excited I was in the days leading up to it, but now that it's here you realize how much of a gong-show this is.
Hopefully I can get my hands on some high-quality (legal) marijuana, because well, it is Vancouver BC after all. :gm:

Anyway, I do like watching the speed skating.Haha, that's pretty true. I was only referring to the situation in Vancouver's Lower Eastside involving a huge number of homeless (most of whom have mental health issues), open drug trafficking, prostitution, gang violence, etc. Yes, most cities have to deal with these issues but it's this particular part of Vancouver where it's become focused and goes way beyond anything most cities experience. It's an issue that's been largely ignored for years.

That's one of the biggest reasons a lot of Vancouverites have been protesting the Olympics. There's a student activism group at my school who went rioting at city hall yesterday.
One of my roommate's friends got arrested for carrying a fire extinguisher. The cops thought it was a weapon. The poor guy was in a lab coat - he was carrying it from one chem lab to another.

Haha, well, their complaints can't be louder than a lot of our own. It's given affordable housing activists, aboriginal rights people, independent media, anarchists, anti-capitalists and students a good issue to collectively rally around.
So far we have:
- soaring costs necessitating cuts to social services including the cancellation of a couple thousand surgeries, closure of 14 schools, laying off 800 teachers and a 95% cut in arts and community sports funding
- "social legacy promises" of affordable housing reneged upon
- 15,000 police and military personnel, the largest military force on the West Coast since WWII
- the weather's been bad. They were predicting that this would be an El Nino year years ago.
- luge track killed a guy.
- torch cauldron didn't come out of the floor properly
- oh yeah, and tonight the barriers fell down at one of the free concert venues. They had to cancel the show and 19 people were hurt.

That's what NBC says. I was watching the mens figure skating long program. American Evan Lysacek put up a gold winning performance but other performers had yet to compete. The last competitor was Russian Evgeni Plushenko who put up an excellent silver medal winning performance. The commentators ruined his entire routine by constantly talking about how he didn't do this like Evan or didn't do that like Evan and how he failed to rise to the occasion and how he'll regret it his whole life, blah, blah, blah (meta-Olympics). Plus you can watch on the internet how they'll skip non-American competitors to see Bob Costas interview Dick Button, some old school skating legend (more meta-Olympics), just to come back for a non-live showing of an American competitor. I'm pretty sure their message is clear.

Of course not. Delaware is a government conspiracy. It doesn't even actually exist. I challenge anyone to actually cite any proof of the existence of a person from Delaware. My stepfather claims to have been there(although even he cant name any person from there) but he was a marine in Nam and I take this as proof that he was subject to some type of nefarious brain washing techniques in order to build a better soldier.

Anyway, I'm not making excuses and I certainly can't deny the US had a much softer side of the bracket but it was a great showing by a very young team. No where near as dominating a performance as the '92 team that beat the US. Enjoy it now, it's not like a Canadian team will win the Stanley Cup any time soon.

Congratulations to Canada, that was a not only a great hockey game, that was one of the best games I've ever seen in any sport.
When they went to 4-on-4 in the OT, you could tell it was a matter of time, Canada was just faster and took advantage of the space. They went from like one shot on goal in the final 13 minutes of the 3rd period to just dominating the action. I had just said to le wife during that period that Crosby really hadn't done much whenever we watched Canada play. :stupid:
The Olympics started off pretty bad with the luge death, opening ceremony malfunctions, bad weather, etc. But they just got better and better as the games went on. The US sets the record for most medals at the Winter Olympics, Canada sets the record for most gold medals. Can't ask for much more than that.
