View Full Version : What's your five year plan?

MasterMerk

As much as INTPs may detest the idea of a set in stone "plan", what do you generally think you'll be doing over the next five years?

From 2006 on, I'll hopefully begin some kind of university degree.

Learn as much as I can about the world in four years. Perhaps move onto a postgraduate degree afterwards.

Then, put my mind into a frenzy of productivity.

.. By then I'll be about half-way ready, getting started with my master plan. *evil grin*

What about you INTPs?

Former plan:

Continue community college classes
Transfer to university in 2006-ish
Graduate with BA in computer science in 2008-ish, start a-workin'

New plan:

Save money (in progress)
Drop out of community college after this semester
Find job in big city (Portland is current target)
Pack up and have a little cross-country adventure traveling to new place of residence
Work and save more money (possibly at a slower rate due to new bills and stuff, although I'll also be working a lot more)
Start taking classes again at some point

ongoing:
Continue with kung fu
Ride bike/run more
Skydive

I don't like to think about life outside 90 days, it is too depressing. I mean I have a career,pension,401(K) and am going to school too, but I actively don't think about tomr too much, it isn't good to do. If, I can find a bit of ok-ness in the moment I am dancing!

<shudder> sounds like a job interview question!
I have no idea...as it happens, don't even know about the next 1 year, but that's just b/c my job ends in July and I'm waiting to see what the next job will be.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a Ph.D. I want to decide on that this year and if I decide to do it start in the Fall of '06. So if I do that, well there's your next 5 years.
If I decide not to...back to the old drawing board.
Anyway, most of my adult life has happened without long-term planning, doing things b/c they seem like a good idea at the time, and so far this has worked out fine.

Ah god, this reminds me of a conversation I had with my father recently. He is setting up a trip to hike the Grand Canyon with my brothers in 2007. He wanted to know if March was a good time for it. I responded that I don't plan 2 months in advance let alone 2 years.

Dad: "Are you ever going to plan anything? Like your career?"

Me: "That's the way I roll."

So... no I have no idea where I will be in five years.

And there I was hoping you were planning to assasinate George Bush.

I hardly ever plan ahead more than a few days, all I can say is that I will hope to be in a better place in life than I am now in 5 years.

Although I don't plan a day ahead when it comes to daily specifics such as what to do this weekend, I have some ideas about the future:

2005 Gain project management/ commercial experience in my current job
2006 Build on commercial experience and find a suitable niche for own company
2007 (Wife back to work?) Start my own company next to corporate job
2008 (Wife back to work!) Quit daytime job and go full time on won company
2009 Go IPO, retire, sit in the warm sand of a Borneo beach and laugh!

Eek, plan? I don't really want to plan, but my tentative plan has some of these possibilites:

#1. Get a job doing something I *don't* hate: financial analysis or managerial accounting. OR #1a: Finish real estate stuff, and get licensed, and hope to make it by using my superior research skills (i.e. getting leads online, etc) . . . maybe do both until real estate takes off, if ever? It often takes awhile to get going in that field. . . and I don't even know if it would be something I'd be good at.
#2 Buy a house, preferably one with a decent amount of land. I can't wait to get away from my noisy apartment and noisy neighbors. I want PRIVACY. Getting my R.E. licence should help by saving massive amounts of $ on brokers fees when I do decide to buy a house. (Anyone see the Wired magazine article about rip-off real estate agents? Ooh, they piss me off. If you know anyone moving to Portland in a year or so, send them to me. I'll be an honest and ethical one. Seriously.)
#3 Visit either Australia -- my long-time friend Ravenwing lives there, and I've always wanted to see that place -- or Denali National Park in Alaska.
#4 Get published. Anything. . . a poem, short story, or article, or book. I've been on a long hiatus from writing, but am starting to get the bug again. I refuse to die never having seen my name in print)

Well, I have another year of highschool after this one but after that I don't really have any specific plans. I want to either study psychology or movie making (odd combination I guess) but it's very possible that those could change within a few months or so, although probably not psychology it's too interesting. I'll formulate a plan after I figure out what my priorities in life are, I don't think it's possible until then.

after high school, my plan was to go to college since I didn't know what I wanted to do.
after maybe 2 or 3 semesters of college I met some guy who I am currently working for.. then eventually I stopped going to college to work fulltime for the guy (a business startup).. so right now, I guess I'm just crossing myfingers for this job to pan out(was at it 1 year without pay, now it's been 1+ year with pay). I also have loyalty to the company/boss(he is enfp) otherwise my current boredom would've probably propelled me to seek new employment.
in 5 years..hopefully the company would be modestly successful ... but, I just feel like I'm floating down a river so I guess I'll just wait and see.

Sock away some money for a few years, now that we're dual income again.
Switch to profession that I enjoy, which might involve going back to school for a 3rd degree.
Switching to a house that is easier and cheaper to maintain (no pool, better floor plan)
Possibly move to a less crowded city/town

To become hurricane prepared, ie get waterproof rooftop carrier for car, those radios that are made for this sort of thing, and to become "lightened" so its easy to up and move if I chose to. That will take a LOT of time, and a lot of work because I have way too much stuff.

It means I will have to continuously go through the "stuff" I own and over a period of a year or so, pare down till have only the things I really really love. Get things super organized so they are easy to pack up, especially the paper files, ie one small file for the really really necessary papers and its easy to put in car and go.

Also, to do the same thing with my bills and continuously pay them down and get ahead financially (yeah, dream on), and generally buy less and get rid of more. Same with dieting and exersize, plan is to try to walk more, eat a little less.

So, "things" need to be pared down, "finances" need to get in better shape, "body" needs to get in better shape, car needs to be paid off, and possibly "resumes" need to be put in to other agencies in places I"m interested in living in.

Still 3 years to go to a MSc, so that's set (unless I change my mind before I'm finished). After that I haven't got a faintest clue...get some sort of job, I suppose. There aren't exactly too many jobs in my chosen field, so I'll have to move to wherever I find work. Or change career, again.

5 years is an awfully long time anyway, plenty of time for random things to happen that would make me redirect my life.

26 Apr 2005, 03:17 AM
Sigh. Sadly, I sort of have my next few years planned out for me. I suppose as an INFJ I'm less unhappy with this than some of you INTPs would be, but it sucks.

I'm supposed to teach here for four years (one almost down) to pay back a scholarship I took at eighteen because I thought there was no other way for me to pay for college (oops). I like teaching; I just wish I had the practical option of moving around, but I'm not really into the idea of paying back 26,000 dollars with crazy ass interest.

So anyway.
2005-2006: teach/save money/maybe get a summer job
2006-2007: teach/save money/get continuing teaching license
2007-2008: either finish fourth year teaching here, or move somewhere else to teach and pay the rest of the money back (about 6,500)/decide whether I want to get started on grad school or National Boards
2008-2009: definitely move somewhere else if not there already, pursue some kind of career advancement or redirection
2009-2010: freak out because I'm going to turn 29.

I believe the old man Campbell was well read in ancient mythology and the sort, so a lot of Star Wars is just regurgetated folklore. But that was the point, and it worked. I like the first three Star Wars, and I think there's nothing wrong with Lucas telling us an epic bed-side story...

Better have a serious discussion with IndieJade or Dman about job prospects, or the lack, thereof here in Ory-gone...unless of course you are going to Portland Maine, or Portland Australia. They just gave a huge percentage of the workers at HP in Corvallis the choice of a severance package, or the possibility of a layoff, in which case they would receive two-weeks pay instead of severance. .....oh yes, and be prepared to spend a lot on housing.

My real goals are as follows:

3. Start popping out babies

Of course I do realize that when any one of the above happens and I start to feel settled, I will panic and introduce radical changes to my plan. Such is life.

It is a major goal of mine to not need a job. I'll be getting income from a variety of different things that won't require much work to keep them going. I'll have many assets and not many liabilities. I'll probably live in a state with better weather, I might be married, I'll definitely be having a blast doing whatever I want to. I might be semi-famous and semi-rich, but those are only bi-products of what I really intend on doing.

In about a year and a half I'll be graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

After that I'd like to move out of my parents house (if other circumstances don't make me do so before I graduate). I'll need to find a job.

An apartment is a must. If my job pays well enough, I'll consider buying a small house or a condo. Ideally though, I'd like to save as much money as possible.

Potentially I'd like to meet someone and start a relationship, but this isn't really a goal.

3rd year:

4th year:
find a law firm to intern at for summer
continue with law school

5th year:

get job

Yeah dude, that is why I transfered during my third year from EE to Business, I knew the competition was very strong (growing against me) and I was only a middle of the pack student in EE, it wasn't that much fun. Now I am in the top 10% or higher in Business and work/study way less.

Having 121 c. hours on the resume as an EE is still getting a lot of attention from the technical-business companies in America...

There are two alternatives:

1)Get Bachelor and Masters in Economics, in order to find a mindless job in some corporate shit keepin in mind as aim to go up the ranks and become the owner of the world.

2)Try to do the "big jump" in cycling, and fight for a place in a pro team.

The second option is the one I'd like the best, but it's incredibly harder than the first.
