Wrote this awhile back when our Mi'kmaq teacher asked us to write a poem on how proud we are for being Native American. This isn't meant to discriminate or offend anyone by the way.

Proud

As a native I'm very proud
but deep inside there's a very dark cloud
it used to be nice with no pain
but all that changed when the white man came
long ago our hearts were pure
but we traded food for diseases without a cure
we won our wars until our warriors died
our people washed out like a raging tide
in the present no white man cares
they don't notice that we are here
this can be changed as the elders say
we should know our traditional ways
but I guess that we have paid
for our tradition will soon fade
all this happened because the white man stayed

Are you truly at a loss of hope for the Native American tradition?
I was taught something valuable to my Gypsy heritage:
tradition goes far beyond any text book definition because it is primarily orally communicated. Tradition doesn't thrive because of etiquette, clothing, religious beliefs, physical precepts, etc. It can be passed down simply by maintaining a state of mind that will allow assurance the tradition will be instilled in it's descendants. Thus, if hope is lost, the tradition will diminish on its' own...
