If anyone is interested I notice this news on how they seem to be able create fusion with a crystal and a tungsten rod. Too bad it still takes more energy to produce than they get out of it. I am interested to see if I can find any more detail on how they are doing this exactly.

Take a look at "fusor" experiments.

The fusor was invented 50 years ago by the same man who invented the television. It works well enough to produce quite a lot of neutrons (through fusion) when fed with deuterium gas. I've even heard that a company has patented a small table-top neutron source using fusor technology.

I will have to look into this it seems interesting. With all the searching I have done I would have thought I would have ran into this, guess I didn't search for the right thing.. Funny how it sounds like this type of fusion has been done for a long time, but maybe this new research has just made the device small and simple enouph for a portible application.
