Hey New Yorkers! Not exactly a meetup thread here, but hijack it and organize one if you want.

I'm headed to NYC for a couple of weeks. So far the impersonal mass of humanity sounds like INTP paradise. All the benefits of civilization without the social interaction, yay. I expect to watch pedestrian patterns for fun.

Anyway, a few questions for you locals:

1. What are the chances of my netbook being stolen, and how do I avoid this?
2. Any really neat non-tourist stuff I should see? (Tourist stuff already booked.)
3. Favorite restaurants?

TYTY,
J

As long as you don't walk around in a shitty neighborhood with netbook in hand yelling that you have one, you should be fine. I've lived in NYC for a few years and I've never had anything stolen. Just keep it in your bag.

Museum of Sex (http://www.museumofsex.com/). Their gift shop is lawl.

A lot of people go to Lombardi's for pizza, but I prefer John's (http://www.johnspizzerianyc.com/index2.htm). I love ricotta and sun-dried tomatoes on my pizza.

Evolution Store (http://theevolutionstore.com/).

Yellow Rat Bastard. (http://www.yrbnyc.com/) I love their logo.

You should swing by South Street Seaport (http://www.southstreetseaport.com/). I used to go there to watch people practice tai chi and look at the crazy performers with a chai latte in hand.

St. Mark's Place. My guess is it appeals to tourists, but depending on your age, it could be a lot of fun. Covers to get into nightclubs in the area are a lot of $$$, but I picked up some rare vinyl from one of the record stores in the East Village.

If you're adventurous and up for an interesting cultural experience, take the train to Boro Park in Brooklyn. Just make sure to dress appropriately or you could get spit on or yelled at in Yiddish.

I also like The Strand. (http://www.strandbooks.com/) Lots of books and you can find some treasures in there if you feel like digging.

Oh right, how could I forget The Strand?
While you're in the area, you might want to see the Union Square Farmers Market. Also nearby is a Max Brenners.

Take the train to Coney Island ; have a knish and a beer at Nathans; walk on the boardwalk; ride the cyclone rollercoaster and maybe go to the aquarium. There's also a freak show in Coney Island, but I haven't seen it. ...also a minor league baseball stadium.

Have dim sum in China town. And coffee and a canoli in nearby Little Italy.

Jing Fong for dim sum if you don't care about ambiance.

Five Points is one of my favorite restaurants that hasn't closed. Their seafood dishes have been consistently excellent.

Weekend brunch outside somewhere or picnic in Central Park for people-watching.

Take a walk along the High Line. If you exit on the south end (Gansevoort), the surrounding streets are pedestrian-friendly/wanderable. Though you might have to dodge women in mini-skirts and stilettos, depending on the time of day.

The Strand has already been mentioned. I agree.

If you're into medieval-ish stuff and have the time, it's a lovely time of year to go up to the Cloisters.

There might be some interesting music in town--perhaps check TimeOut New York or something of the sort if that's your thing.

I'm not qualified to talk about hipster Brooklyn, but there are plenty of places like Barcade, Pete's Candy Store, Brooklyn Brewery, Stinky Bklyn, etc. to find your new favorite arcade game/beer/cheese/etc.

Edit: Does your tourist stuff include one of the cruises around the city (I think it's Circle Line?)? I don't know how expensive they are, but it's a nice way to spend an evening.
