Invitations mean "invitation to join the beta subsciption?"
(I want an invitation, too. Or, any info about "why not" :) )

It's great. I've had an account(s) since July or so and use it daily to send and receive files, and for file storage. The 1 gig of email storage rocks. I haven't had to delete any messages (unless out of paranoia) yet. I am subscribed to alot of mailing lists and it arranges them in a way which if you squint really hard resembles what looks like half assed forum. The spam filter is nice and does it's job well.
The invites aren't hard to get anymore. Maybe they felt guilty for people selling their bodies or all of their stuff to get an invite, but suddenly they became much more available and gmailswap (http://gmailswap.com/) shut down. Now, I am recieving so many invites, that I just don't know what to do with them.

Why not would be privacy. Read their own privacy policy through, then decide for yourself. Or put 'gmail privacy' into a search engine and read the non-google results (http://www.epic.org/privacy/gmail/faq.html). There's a reason why they want to store so much of your email and then try to make you feel like they're doing -you- a favor.
Also take into consideration the fact that your non-gmail using correspondents will have their email monitored and stored without ever even consenting to this policy. There are people who simply won't correspond via email with gmail users.

Huh. Yeah, I did read their paragraphs on privacy ... and then I posted my question, here, to see if others had wondered further...
Everyone with anything to offer tends to phrase it as doing -you- a favor - don't you find that ?
I often find myself wondering, more generally than in just this particular example, what the rest of you really think, about the notions of privacy... Or, if *you* (plural and singular, both) do... - Logically, I'm not alone in thinking about this - especially not here, in such an inquiring group...

I think there's no reason to be scared of google. I have a pretty good feeling that they wouldn't snoop on their subscribers. Try it if you dare, it's better than any other free email.

Off topic : Utopmk, would you go to DevNull's thread, What's up with that avatar
http://forums.intpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=2043&page=13&pp=10
and tell us about yours ? Or if you don't want to post in that thread (and you might not) would you tell me, at least ?
Back to the topic of email accounts - and the discussion of, "do others here think about the topic of privacy, too?" - I don't happen to think one needs a sense of "fear" to exercise prudence. And... maybe the notion of Privacy needs its own thread (if anyone else does ever cogitate on the topic).
