Have any of you had any experience getting GPS through a laptop?

I'm looking at something like this (http://www.garmin.com/products/gps18/), then getting appropriate software, if possible. I'd like to be able to plan a route, adjust it on the fly as need be, then save off the route's file.

I've got some software to convert the file to a specific format, to deal with as I need (the program can deal with a lot of different GPS files, it seems).

You think this would work somehow? Any suggestions or ideas? Or am I completely off base?
