I don't recollect any personal experiences in my youth that appear to share the enthusiasm I think you are expressing above. But I'd like to ask you to elaborate further before I cast my vote.

How long did you sit next to this old cracked out hippy, and what were the details of your interaction?

Once I was sitting on the bus, minding my own business, when a couple of mentally disabled guys came up and started talking to me. One was going off on the local basball team, listing stats and his thoughts on how they'll get to the World Series. The other one was quoting the Bible.

After about 10 minutes of the whole "smile and nod" thing the baseball dude asked me if I liked the Rockies, to which I responded "I'm not really into sports". I looked over to the other guy, "... Or God."

They kind of looked at each other and got quiet. I got off at the next stop.

uh.. I have no opinion yet .. I don't think it matters.. but.. well.. you'll meet plenty of crazier people who aren't hippies/bums.

yeeeey! i've drawn hush's ire!

not that i care what you think of my poll, but...

let's play a game!

it's called "make a pseudo intellectual conversation out of 'spam'" (i was going to post something like this eventually, but this makes it so much more fun, and i do want people's responses, don't be misled by "pseudo intellectual")

i'm curious what people think about the fringes of society, such as homeless people (who tend to be mentally ill, either because they are homeless or it is the reason they are homeless). personally, i really enjoy walking down the street and coming across someone talking to themselves, or staring blankly at a wall. it's out of the ordinary, exciting and interesting. so many people put up a front of perfection, strength, or sameness that it's refreshing to see people being so intimate and themselves without realizing it. not to say you have to be crazy or cracked out to be intersting. i enjoy seeing a girl walking down the street smiling and humming to herself, maybe even skipping. or a guy who's so lost in his thoughts that he runs into someone. how many people talk to themselves when they are alone? why don't they do it when they are in public?

i've been developing this in myself lately (not really consciously, it just kind of started happening and then i became aware of it). i hum as i walk, i watch my surroundings (such as that pigeon on the eave over there) rather than the people surrounding me. i jumped onto the top of one of those small retaining walls and walked along the top yesterday because it looked fun.

according to the poll it looks like at least a few people tend to agree with me when it comes to seeing fringe people in public. i'm glad.

*edit* by the way, i think it's hillarious that hypnos doesn't like hippies and lives in berkeley
