OK. But, who/what is Kantianism?
and...I would have expected a little more existenialism at the expense of strong egoism.

Hmm...a good quiz, all things considered.

Um... Immanuel Kant? Basically it means following the categorical imperative, where one acts as if such an action would become the law of how humanity should act.

Some of the questions were less than ideal --- distrust any formulation without the option: wtf cares ? --- and since I am not a believer in revealed religion, but acknowledge God as that which was and is and shall be, I substituted that and my royalism for the faith questions rather than the injunctions and precepts of established religion...

Inexperienced in the course of the world, incapable of being prepared for whatever might come to pass in it, I ask myself only: can you also will that your maxim become a universal law?"

I am not sure whether I should interpret this as not having any direction in life or as being a "well-rounded personality", the latter surely sounds better, the first fits the INTP description better.

Whether or not I'm a nihilist depends on your intepretation of the word 'meaning'.
Well, Nietzsche, strictly speaking, was not a nihilist -- he started the existentialist tradition.

Existentialists say that there is no purpose for you or an essential "good/evil" in the universe outside of you. Nihilists might say that this doesn't even exist inside you.

cjs55
19 May 2005, 12:03 AM
Nietzche was a nihilist if you simply add the word 'inherent' before meaning in the sentence:

"I don't believe anything has any meaning".

However, it is true that this results in existentialism and nihilism being very similar. Anyways...I do believe in natural inner states/life purpose. However, this cannot be chosen, which brings me away from existentialism...

Trying to label one's own conceptual framework can be the hardest part sometimes.

I dunno.. Sure, "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die!" I sort of agree with, but I wouldn't say it captures all of my philosophy. I believe in finding out what makes you enjoy life, and then doing that. I also believe in helping others do the same, to the extent that you feel you're up to it. As for the potential involvement of a god (or a plan, purpose or whatever), I figure that if he/she/it doesn't actively let me know about it, then there's no need for me to focus on it.

Maybe there's some other label not part of this test that matches me better :D

I didn't really strongly agree or disagree with many things there. I guess it sort of fits... I might have swapped Utilitarianism for Nihilism. The divine command thing is a bit misleading... it's not like I don't think a lot can be learned from religion.... i just wouldn't say the word of God should rule society.

whether or not I had sexual relations with that intern depends on your interpretation of the word "the".

My apathy is high compared amongst us, but I really dont care. I guess Im jaded in general, but if I love someone I wont let them down. I am working on getting the ego down for unconventional reasons, 40% is not bad.

I imagine divine command would have been high if God was referred to more than religion.

You scored as Strong Egoism.

Your life is very much guided by the concept of Egoism: You work primarily to promote your own interests.

I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.
I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; and I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows.

Interesting that the quotes used in the result's description of "Strong Egoism" were by Ayn Rand, founder of Objectivism, the philosophy with which I identify most strongly anyhow...

?I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.?

?I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; and I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows.?

Your life is guided by the principles of Utilitarianism: You seek the greatest good for the greatest number.

"The said truth is that it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong." -- Jeremy Bentham

"Whenever the general disposition of the people is such, that each individual regards those only of his interests which are selfish, and does not dwell on, or concern himself for, his share of the general interest, in such a state of things, good government is impossible." -- John Stewart Mill

I'm surprised of the score on Apathy. I've secluded myself quite well of my surrounding society for a week now. It may have well influenced my mood and thus score. I jump back and forth on whether mankind is doomed to destroy itself or whether we'll evolve to fit our environment better and into more responsible beings and all that jazz..

I looks like Hedonists tend to be sensors.

We have a lot of existentialists here though. Would that be INTP? Or N? Or I, or T, or P?

Apparently INTPs along with INTJs, ENTPs and ENTJs tend to adhere to rationalism. I don't know how existentialism is related to rationalism. There might be a thread about it. I'll have to look.

So rationals/NTs in general. Hrm.

(These threads should come with... dunno, INTP-only polls or something, so that something useful can actually be done with all those results.)

I totally agree, I do follow existentialism. I need to read up on nihilism again, it's been awhile, though looking at google definitions it sounds like something I follow as well. I need to look up the rest except for justice, which, even my friends say I care too much about.

There are many brands of Existentialism, but one thing common to all of them is Sartre's famous quote "existence precedes essence." This loosely means that our essence is the sum of the actions and decisions we make. Existentialism, I think, depending on what Philosopher you follow (they vary greatly), is a position that appeals to the individualism of NTs.

You scored as a Existentialism
Your life is guided by the concept of Existentialism: You choose the meaning and purpose of your life. "Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does." "It is up to you to give [life] a meaning." --Jean-Paul Sartre "It is man's natural sickness to believe that he possesses the Truth." --Blaise Pascal

Not particularly. Justice is assumed to be a T thing, for example.

If you follow the link at the end of the quiz to the guy's wiki page, you'd see that he mentions that everyone seems to score as an existentialist. I don't know whether all INTPs are existentialists by nature and a large percentage of test-takers were INTP, or whether the test is just not very good.

Oh, I was making the assumption that most of the test-takers were INTP's, though your other proposal is equally valid... I guess we'll have to get a sample size of a wide variety of personality types to truly see whether or not the test is flawed.

Sounds about right. As I'm an existentialist.
However, I'd have liked Apathy to be a bit higher.
And Divine Command. I've always seen it as a very romantic thing, somehow.. =/

So many INTPs scoring "Existentialism". I wonder if this is due to belonging to a rarer type; by necessity you end up making up your own rules to life? Definitely suits me anyway ...

I have not really delved into philosophy wholeheartedly, but I think I believe in Absurdism moreso than Existentialism:

There is inherent meaning in the universe (either intrinsic or from God)
No - Atheistic existentialism
Maybe, but humans must have faith to believe there is - Theistic existentialism
Maybe, but humans can never know it - Absudism

The latter seems to be the most logical.
