one has xp, other has fedora core

Conexant ?

If you state the exact model number it will help those here who can help. O/W they can't help... On the other hand with the same information you could pull a driver off the internet in the same time it takes to ask the question.

Try looking through Modemsite.com (http://modemsite.com/56k/index.asp)

I assume you mean a linmodem...

Anyway judging by this support page Linmodems.org (http://linmodems.org), sooner you than me.

Sooner you than me anyway: configuring windows connections is a subset of hell, doing it twice over will be fun.

no, winmodems, that is what the devices are actually called, but yes, doing it is hell :(

A winmodem ( software modem ) with linux support is called a linmodem. Of course, you are at liberty to use a simple winmodem without linux support on your linux system if you so wish. Might take a bit of time though.
