View Full Version : So how do I make sense of this?

At some point people looked at me sideways when I explained I tested as a 9 or a 1 on some enneagram test not so long ago. Not caring much for enneagram, I let that be that.
Reflecting on that, for kicks I just took some free test (from similiarminds, I think) for kicks.
So what do I make of this? This time I'm 5, by a hair vs 9, followed most closely by 1 from there.

I recall from earlier dealings with the Enneagram on this forum that 5s, 6s and 9s were among the most common Enneagram types for INTPs. Perhaps you're right on the cusp of whatever trait axis ultimately differentiates between 5 and 9 for INTPs.
According to Enneagram theory, 5w9 and 9w5 types are invalid (wings can only be "adjacent" types, such as 5w6 or 9w8). But it's my belief that any personality type theory involving only a few types, whether based on a highly robust statistical foundation or not, is at high risk of having trouble accounting for the vast variety of people that exists, and that the more limitations are placed on what trait combinations are considered possible, the more likely there will be the occasional outlier that doesn't quite fit the expected molds.
Of course, it could also be the test that is in error. In particular, as a test writer, one can easily make unfounded assumptions on how questions will be interpreted, or in what context they are applied.
From reading your posts on this forum, I would say that 5, and to some limited extent 1, are integral to the persona I perceive. 9 is a bit more difficult to spot on a forum, though.

You're a 5w6 sp/so. Which is how you present on the forum.

Hm. Maybe I need to find a better test. There wasn't a single question that posed the slightest amount of thought or self-reflection, nor escaped the most extreme, immediate, fully confident/accurate "yes" or "no" response on the scale.

Hi Ptah (and anyone else reading);
I am curious as to any more insight you have in regards to your results? I just recently came across the Enneagram concept and took the full test at The Enneagram Institute. My results seem to have come out similar to yours in the 5 / 9 area and I am not sure yet what to make of it. After reading through the information on their site relating to 5 and 9 as well as 5w6 ... 5 is surely the better fit for me as a main type but 5w6 doesn't fit quite as well in some ways and 5w9 (that isn't possible in their system) seems like it would be. I am sure after many tests that I am INTP and its description fits me very well.
I also noticed while reading through that I am currently not in the most healthy state of 5 and that is likely leading to some of the confusion in my results.
Test Results:
Type 1, The Reformer: 18
Type 2, The Helper: 8
Type 3, The Achiever: 13
Type 4, The Individualist: 17
Type 5, The Investigator: 25
Type 6, The Loyalist: 22
Type 7, The Enthusiast: 9
Type 8, The Challenger: 8
Type 9, The Peacemaker: 24
Self-Preservation: 55

Your insight (or anyone else's for that matter) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
