Hum, I just registered here, after perusing some of the posts around here. It's nice to see people who arent terribly different from myself :), that's a new thing, let me tell you. Anyway, I just wanted to post an introduction, I figure it's a nice way to start things. So sorry that this isnt very interesting, haha, I'll get around to posting more and getting an avatar, etc, very soon. Can't wait to read more. Thanks :)

Yes, I'm female, and thank you.
Right now I'm in my last year of High School (which, suprisingly, isnt as great as everyone likes to say it is, hehe)

I never liked high school... nor the 4 semesters I spent in college.. what are your plans after high school?

My hopes are to major in Game Design or Animation in New Jersey (I know, an odd place for my top choice of college location)
I'd really like to major in philosophy, but other than -teaching- philosophy, I can't think of a profession it could lead to.

Have you ever been in New Jersey?

Not yet, but I'll be visiting come spring break. The college I want to go to is there, Bloomfield College, http://www.bloomfield.edu/cat/

what would you do with a game design / animation degree?

Close, but not in. I would be staying in Belleville, living with a good friend of mine.

Apply like mad to anywhere that would take me, hehe. I'd really love to be making games like Final Fantasy, Soul Reaver, things like that, but it's a VERY tough market, so I'll take whatever I can get. I could also apply to places like Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, etc. Assuming I know my stuff, of course

I lived in Belleville..... Ontario, Canada for 5 years once.

Nevermind, I just checked it on mapquest and according to that, you're about 13 miles outside Newark. I thought the name sounded familiar, but I've never actually been there. Maybe Bloomfield is nicer. Newark is the ugliest, scariest city I've ever been in. But it's cool that you'll be right outside New York City, if you're into that sort of thing.

Haha, so I've heard (many many times). I'll admit it's a little scary to be moving from the most conservative-christian-bubble wrapped place, to somewhere so far and close to Newark (I live in Orange County right now.. thankfully I was not -raised- here.. So I'm anxious to get out again).
I always wanted to live in New York, ever since I was a little girl, so maybe it will turn out to be better than expected, even :)

Right now I'm doing mostly just little snippets of digital art, and video/audio editing here and there. I'm pretty photoshop savvy, but I have yet to even learn flash (I can't afford it quite yet). Basically, I'm still learning :)

you can upload pictures here:

I "paid" for a "copy" of "Macromedia FlashMX 2004".. I am probably going to get into actionscript at some point(for my job).
Flash itself is pretty easy to use.

Hum. I've got a DA account.. I'll post some links from there.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/9027738/ Wanted to do some typical anime, heh
http://www.deviantart.com/view/8000619/ the full size of my avatar, my first vector.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/9655586/ ..i ought to slap a parental advisory on this, or warning for those who don't like macabre.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/5971203/ this one is a little older, but i still kind of like it.. although i'm not much for anthro.
Last one, this is my current project. http://groups.msn.com/UhmAlexsSite/artworkandstuff.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=233 a work in progress.. I don't know if I'll ever actually finish it.. I'm not much for backgrounds.
Again, I'm not too good yet, but I'm learning with time :)

your style has too much of a commercial appeal for me... :(
That doesn't mean the art isn't good.. one thing I like is that the style has some anime influences(I think) but you haven't overrun your work with dragon-ball-z or the more generic anime form.

I don't generally do a lot of anime, but it is where I got my start. I dabble in it here and there, they just tend to be the pieces that I wind up finishing because they're so much easier to do. Also, I can't stand DBZ.. it drives me nuts.

Yay. Someone else interested in game development. I want to become a game designer, but I will be starting as a programmer.
I recommend "right-brain" learning of art. You live near New York. http://www.drawright.com/allworkshops.html

Ah, well the thing is, I do a lot of paintings and more traditional art, it's just that I do it all at school in my classrooms, so when I get home I tend to want to do more of my own thing. I rarely bring home my paintings and drawings because they just don't appeal to me. I'm more interested in the story-boarding, and character design, than the actual programming of the game, although computer science does fascinate me.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. =b We are just approaching the same job title from different directions. One from artist, the other from programmer.
I recommend the magazine Game Developer, http://www.gdmag.com , the CMP Game Group of which is a part, http://www.cmpgame.com/ , and the International Game Developer's Association, http://www.igda.org .
I was living in Illinois about a year ago. I moved to California so that I could be closer to the Game Developers Conference and more importantly, silicon valley.
Speaking of the GDC... Yuji Naka walked within five feet of me! AHAHAHAHAHAHA *dances a jig* It's great because the industry is still young, so you get to see big-name people all over the place. ^_^

Harr, I'm a smart. Thanks so much for the links, I'm browsing through them right now :D
I do feel it's almost a waste to be moving out of California, when so much of the industry is based here, but I suppose I could always move back after college. I'm so lucky too, because I've got an uncle who actually worked for that old company Acolade, so he knows the industry and whatnot, he got in by just a stroke of luck, too. There was an ad in the newspaper that said "Do you like to play Video Games? Apply here" and he got the job. Crazy, eh?

;P Come to the next GDC. *wink wink* I'll make sure to avoid you.
