Isn't that usually a setting you can get on some browsers? Like Opera, for example.

Will this feature be optional for users? I LOATHE auto-refresh. I hate it when I'm looking at a page, and then my browser starts to reload the page by itself and makes me wait for it to load again every minute or so, and I lose my place of what threads that I last read. Plus I usually browse the forum in the background while I'm doing other things. My browser calls attention to all newly loaded pages, which is useful for me (on dialup) except on auto-refreshing pages.

That's why I suggested it for "forum index" only. I could see how it would be a dialup bandwidth whore, but you're going to refresh anyway. Maybe it should be configurable in your profile.

Thats the exact reason that I suggested this.

I don't care if it's on the forum index, as long as it isn't implemented on the "view posts since last visit page". That's where I look for new posts, not the main index. I keep up with what I haven't read by the yellow page indicators, which sometimes disappear when the page refreshes whether I read them or not.

Believe it or not, there's still places in the US that don't have high speed internet connections available. I happen to be stuck in one of those places right now. And, I don't think you should laugh at other people who may not be as well off as you.
Can we make it a profile option then?

the refresh was just going to be on this http://www.intpcentral.com/
I could have a timer display and you could cancel the timer if you wanted.... ?? and then it would set a cookie that you didn't want the timer to run .. ?

I usually keep "forum index" open in one of my tabs. I like the idea of live content.
It also makes for easy new post skimming, if you're doing 2 things at once.

You should look into a few DUN tweaks, if you haven't already. If you didn't care about picture quality, you might even try one of those 5x accelerator programs. A finely tuned PC will run nearly as well as DSL, for web browsing.

Ah, so that's how those things work. I assumed they were just marketing.

That was a last resort. They only work by reducing the quality of the content.
The best way is to manually configure your DUN settings through the registry...
MaxMTU:576
MSS:536
RWIN: 4288
TTL :128
I would set my "Session Keep Alive" at 6 minutes.
When I was refreshing my memory on these settings via google, I found this amazing post on a speed tweaking forum about dial up:
Want to know how to tweak your registry to get a Maximum Speed of 230400
instead of that old possible 115200? Here are the steps:
**Warning, you will be changing your registry settings. I cannot be held responsible
for any issues that may arise by keying in this information****
This one over-clocks your modem from a measly 115200 bps to a possible 230400 bps! That's double the speed! This tweak requires some fancy regedit steps and …err, nothing else much but knowledge. Now listen carefully. Go to your modem's reg key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\000#\) and look for a setting lled "Properties" (not a key name, just a bin within the modem's key). The best way to find it for Windows is going to Start>Find>IN the registry and in the bottom corner click the button, "registry editor". It should have a long list of numbers and letters, two by two… double click on it to edit it. Near the last row of those numbers (Seventh from the end, usually) should be the combinations "C2 01" or a close resemblance. If you see these nod your head, if not then look harder. Now click your mouse cursor before those and press the delete key twice to get rid of them. In their place put in "84" and "03". Now exit out of regedit and go into your Dial-Up Networking properties and click to "Configure…" your modem. Where it reads "Maximum Speed" click the pull down menu and look below 115200 to find a new number… 230400!
Now your modem can send and receive stuff twice as fast [from it's buffer, not ISP].
System may require a restart for

Value Name: MaxMTU
Value Type: String Value
Value Data: 1500
Details: If you're using DSL and your ISP has implemented PPPoE, you should set MaxMTU to 1492 or less.
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
Value Name: DefaultTTL
Value Type: String Value
Value Data: 64
Details: range 1-255, use any number between 32 and 128
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
Value Name: PMTUDiscovery
Value Type: String Value
Value Data: 1
Details: Boolean vlue, 0-false or 1-true. Many connections perform better with this entry at 1, however, if you prefer to set your upstream to send fixed 1500 packets, you might want to use 0 instead. When set at 1, establishing connections and initial transfer speed might slow down a bit, however you will get better throughput if somewhere in the path large packets need to be fragmented.

According to Microsoft, Tcp1323Opts should be a DWORD, rather than a string value, however seems that the documentation is incorrect and a string value is necessary to enable large RWIN suppert.
