Obviously new to the forum. I've recently discovered the MBTI and found that, no, I'm not a freak. Or at least, there are other freaks out there just like me...

So.... Hi y'all! :hello:

Wow, there's someone actually awake...

Well, as to the technical details, I'm 41, married, with two stepkids out of the house and one kid in 7th grade. I'm a computer geek, like most. I like to sing and play guitar at church. My latest fad is my motorcycle, a Honda VTX1800. I live in Escondido CA, just outside San Diego.

I struggled through most of school; "I get A's on your tests, so why do I have to do homework?" My parents thought I was a perfectionist, but one look at my room blew that out of the water. At 12 I discovered that I could sing, and that people who formerly trashed me would go "ooh, aah"; so that's been my mode of acceptance for most of my life. That and an instinct with computers and other electro-machanical systems.

I first discovered MBTI when I went back to university to get my degree. It was in an introduction to distance learning; basically trying to show folks their own learning styles and tendencies. It blew me away when I saw myself in writing.

I mean, believe me, I have been alone for a long time. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean "lonely, please won't somebody love me..." I mean, I know two, maybe three people on the planet that 'get' me. I'm sure you've heard it before, so I won't bore you with the details. suffice it to say, I'm happy I found a forum like this. Cool beans. I'm looking forward to some good discussions.

I can relate. The only thing that broke the ice, so to speak, in meeting people was because I played bass guitar in some bands with "the cool guys."

And there's a few of us that are up late most nights. :) Insomnia and the quiet, alone time are welcome.

What's your education in?

I'm woring on my computer science degree. I've been working with the little nasties since '84. I started out in electronics engineering but soon got sucked into computers. I've done just about everything (easiliy bored) but lately I'm specializing in enterprise management systems. I'm a Unicenter architect, which allows me to bring all my skills to bear, from Windows to UNIX to networking. Lately I'm getting bored again (six months on a Six Sigma project!) so I think I'm going to go back to networking. I'm definitely not cut out for management; I have this foolish belief that people should work for a living, whereas management requires the ability to coordinate kindergartners. But I'm not bitter...

Howz 'bout you?

I've worked in computers (support, networking, programming, and lately web design) for about 8 years. I majored in economics though, as it was the shortest route out after about 5 years of college. I'm a partner in a company that does "digital media content production," hence the webdesign. We're trying to focus on the production side though. I'm an audio engineer in my spare time and the other guys are video types. We're attempting a focus on documentaries at the moment, but the web stuff is taking over my time right now. Hopefully I'll get to the audio aspect in a couple months.

Unfortunately, I get to babysit a lot as well. I just hope it pays off someday...

Tell us about the kids. I'm interested because I'll be a first time parent in Feb and am a little freaked out. :)

Tell us about the kids. I'm interested because I'll be a first time parent in Feb and am a little freaked out. :)

Interesting on the audio thing. Another one of my little fascinations is recording. I've got a Boss BR-864, as well as some software like Band-in-a-Box and some of the obligatory looping s/w. I love it. Far cry from my radio shack recorder in sixth grade!

As to the kids; I married when I was 23 and my wife was 29. She had two kids, 6 and 8. We dated for six months before tying the knot. Everyone we knew said we were crazy and it wouldn't last. 18 years later, they're all divorced and we have the family we dreamed about.

Wasn't easy. I've had a lifetime of "you're not my dad" and every other trick in the book. It was difficult for me, because I didn't have the perspective of time. What i mean, is that I didn't get to watch the kids learn to walk and talk and feed themselves; so when they would argue, I responded as if the arguments were coming from people who understood what they were saying. It was different with my daughter, who is now 12. Step kids are tough, but you learn some eternal truths.

For instance, one learns to pick your battles wisely. One learns that all people simply want respect, even people who can't speak the language and can't control their bodies. I was very dogmatic with the first two. I was following the book, so to speak. I didn't listen very well; hell, let's be honest, I only cared about talking.

I listen more now. Not just with my own kid, either. I listen to people in general. It took a lot for me to learn that I can't make people to do the right thing, but that the effort is worth the payoff. Kind of like the commercial for teens, where the friend is standing in the path of a rushing train and the narrator asks "what would you do? Kids need correction, but we don't have to be rude about it.

Now my kids (the older ones) are very well adjusted. The oldest, Jason, is in a band in Venice CA. He plays bass and is adored by many chicks ofthe female persuasion. He's still working on what he want's to do when he grows up, but then, who isn't? Jamie is two years his younger and she's working on a degree in physical therapy, I think with pediatrics. Boy did she come around! My youngest, is in seventh grade and is an artist. She plays cello, sings, and has an uncanny knack for drawing faces.

Congrats on your upcoming child, Maestro! Having children has an amazing affect on your ability to slice through bullshit and come to the core of issues. Things that seem to matter now will slide into perspective, where the things that you don't think you could ever do will be done. And over it all is this love thing. Let that take precedence and you'll make the right decisions.

I'm spent; gotta go to sleep. Good talking with you, Maestro! This is the first forum I've ever logged on to where someone actually asked for more info about me. I'll talk to you later.

:)

Welcome. Just a warning: You need to forgive the childish among us. I mean, imagine someone with the power of an INTP, using it for childish antics on an INTP forum! You can imagine what a bastard they might be. Maybe when they have children their sillyness will lessen.

- Thanks for the warning :)
- No need to imagine, I haven't always been the shining tower of restraint you see standing before you today ;)
- And no, it won't

If anything, that's encouraging. I can't tell you how frustrating it is restraining my humor, especially at work. Why can't people work and laugh at the same time? Then again, maybe it's just that I tend to find the most eclectic things hilarious. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has to fight the urge to tug on people's sense of reality.

Hello. :hello:

It's interesting you married somebody quite a bit older. If you don't mind my asking, how did you two meet?

I believe of all the members of the forum, you live closest to me. I live more north of San Diego in San Clemente, about 40 minutes from Escondido (an area familiar to me because my sister lives there). Maybe I'll see ya around! :)

Ah yes, the story! (Wayne and Garth go "deeedleedleee deeedleedleee" with the wavy hands)
Cindy's a redhead with great gams. I caught site of her but knew she was way out of my league. I told a friend, who just happened to know her. One day I had been to the dentist (root canal) so the whole left side of my face was dead. This guy comes prancing through the lab singing "Somebody wants your body!" to the tune of kindergarten "nyah nya nyah, nya nyah nyah!" I literally ran to her office, skidding around the corner and said "Hi! So, you want to go out?" (remember the half dead face, here) She just laughed and said sure. Our first date was a bike ride from Santa Monica pier down to Manhattan Beach and back again.

And yeah, we're going to have an open house here soon, so I'll send you an invite. Be great to meet you! :hello:

~*Aven*~

Dig that. I'm struggling with statistics right now. Never paid attention in HS but I spent the last 7 months on a Six Sigma project so I decided to take a stats course. Bad move. I got so sick of it at work that now I can't stand to do the homework. Bad juju for an INTP. Someday is right...

I keep struggling with giving up on the CS degree and playing with another language. I have so many half finished books on my shelf though, that my wife insists I finish one (just one!) So in between my homework I sneek in some CBT's on ASP.NET. I learned C# and C++.net enough to be dangerous, but now I'm going through the ASP.net with VB.net.

.... in between homework, of course ;)

lol, quirky story. Was the guy singing those words the same friend? I'm getting a little confused, you go from the dentist, a kindergarten, a lab, then her office.
