I would just like to mention that having gone to 6th form for the second day, I have now found out that i'm the only atheist in my philosophy class (of which there are about 14 of us).

Thrown in just for my fun are 3 definate Christians, whereas all the others think there is either a god or some other power.

I'm sure I was being given evil looks by someone a few seats away from me.

You'll find a few atheists on this site... don't worry. Check out the backlogs if you have the time...

And INTPs are, as a group... a minority, right? There's a few. It's a large few. Nyah.

for now I'm agnostic.. but personally, it doesn't really matter whether there is a god or not though.

I, too, am agnostic. I believe there could be a god, or some higher being, or that this is not reality, it's like I believe in everything and nothing at the same time. Anything could be possible, but I don't know for sure.

Exactly. Some things seem improbable enogh as to be ignored, so I ignore them.

Agnostic. Though one of my friends did come up with an interesting theory that this is not reality. It is instead a god's parody of reality. I could probably get into that...

I do. Sometimes I'll do the opposite and step on every crack. Anything for consistency. I'd imagine a lot of the less confident (possibly the confident too) are very self conscious. For instance, I either have my hands in my pockets, or folded. My head is always tilted down a little while walking, looking at in front of my feet, or the ground not too far ahead of me. This is unless I'm in an area where it is just me, or very few people, in which case I might look up. Or if I'm somewhere that I feel very comfortable (and accepted/normal/belonging?) like at a chess tournament, I walk confidently and focused. =]

As for religion, the thread didn't really start as a question I think(?) but I'd say I'm probably agnostic. I don't really spend any time worrying about it, the whole religion thing has never been something I've felt was important for me.

Oh and I'm a newbie here. My name is Gary. *hi*.

Hello :)

I used to be agnostic. I wanted to believe in God, I really did, but I found i just didn't follow it. Then I thought to myself "do really believe that there could be a God..........nooooooo not really"

Oh and there are 2 of us now, someone moved into the group ^_^.

Agnostic is me. It's not that i do or don't believe in god. It's more of the fact I believe that anything is possible, so god would be a possibility.

Im agnostic when i think about god or lack there of on the rare occasions that i deem thinking about it worth the time. :P

On a side note, How do i talk to my grandpa and deflect the topic of god when he inevitably brings it up?

Introduce the subject first.

Tell him you are thinking of becoming a Catholic Priest. With hopes of the Papacy. Talk about the vestments you will wear; the monstrances you will fondle; the function of nuns in the modern world. Bore him with the subject.

I'm an atheist. I'm a horrible person in that I tend to think of religion as a nice little pill people take regularly so they can rationalize everything that happens and make themselves feel more important.

rationalisation eh?....

I would love to have a pill like that :p

I'm an atheist as well. It's a lonely existence... unless you manage to stumble upon an INTP board where atheists run rampant. :D

Do you feel persecuted as an atheist? Do you think it really matters to anyone in your class? I used to pretend to be a socialist to irk people in business classes for fun. Have fun with it.

My grandfather was an atheist (and Republican) and no one seemed to make a big deal about it, except his democratic methodist wife.

Agnostic here; not even remotely Anti-God....(very much Anti-Bible though) as implied by the word athiest.
Anyways, that being stated....I'll say I wanna go work for the church and be a bishop or something....Making a living off religion looks like it can be real sweet; and easy.

'cept I wouldn't conform to the moral standards and all that...like abstinence and poverty or whatever....oh, and I wouldn't be very pious, righteous or anything like that cause I'm agnostic.

But look; I'd get to wear all kindsa Holy duds!

If you're an atheist and you don't want people to persecute you on that basis...
Just tell 'em you're a gay cannibal.

Or, if you don't want to tell a lie; just tell the cretins something benign but not-understandable by the mainstream intelligence:

Say "So I'm Atheist. I think the real problem here is how I like to masticate while eating dead animals."

heh, that one throws about 3/4 -3/5 of the population....it's fun.

To be honest I do to a degree. There is one other atheist as I found out in the group....but...ermm....she's not really too bright to say it politely. In fact she's the most superficial person who doesn't care about anyone else I have ever met.
So she deosn't really help give me a good name :p.

The problem is that the lessons are structured just like a Religious Education lesson. Last time we were asked "What do you think the soul is and embodies". I asked if it was from a Christian or my viewpoint....I was told it was from mine.
So I start to write what I think the soul is. I wrote that 'The soul is a fabrication to help people cope with the idea of death more easily'
The teacher really really didn't like that answer, as everyone elses was like 'It's something inside you which lives on after death', etc...

Sometimes I think i'm seen as being awkward because I see the "bad points" about god, or the opposite side of the Christian coin.
I try to see the Christian view....but I feel that I shouldn't be pressured into accepting the views of others just because mine are different.

I get some quite evil looks too.... :(

Why? What evidence is there? And what god are you talking about? The Christian one? The Islam one? Which God? Back up your statements with some reasons, please.

Seriously, have some fun it. I am not arguing your belief, but "god" does not have to mean Christian, Jewish, or Islamic god. God does not have to mean any mythological being. Many scientists use the term "god" loosely to mean the force of nature; some people feel god is the higher consciousness of the living planet. Having said that, feel free to alter the defintion of soul to anything you like, including science based concepts such as energy. Stick to your guns and principles, if you don't mind losing the A. However, I would use arguments from reknown philosophers to fight a hack philosophy professor, who seems to dislike nonconformist thought.

On the evil looks, smile and laugh right back at them.

Persecuted? I live in the Bible Belt... but not really. My parents don't care, and my friends that need to know, know, and everyone else can go do something ridiculous. It hasn't come up too much, but I've got my arguments in line and my glare shield up.

Speaking of bible belt: I went to college where the late William Faulkner and still other great southern writers call home, and observed all the Baptist hypocrites alternate between sin and attending youth groups. In my observations, they become terribly defensive, because they are often insecure about their own loyalty to their "convictions" in practice. Christians being hypocritical is not a new subject, but it can help to understand one reason why they persecute those with other beliefs and how to dismantle their arguments. (edited)
