All of my childhood dreams of being a Rock Star have been shot in the ass. There has to be a way to cut out the major labels.

Stay in the garage. What about going back to the patron system? Find one rich family instead of a faceless corporation, and get them to sponsor you... let them have a pet band. I don't think it would catch on, though. Not much opportunity of a return.

I have to say im glad for mainstream music. It might be bad for the artists but at least i get to hear their stuff. It may not be a living but it makes people happy.

Stay indy. Play music for love. Have a day job to pay the bills.
This is how you do it,
Phreon
Stay indy. DIY. Take it as far as you can, and hopefully it'll pay your bills someday. If not, meh. If so, more power to ya.

Oh gosh yes. And it applies to virtually every employment imaginable.

Ever heard of the capital lock key on your keboard? It's on the left hand side of a qwerty keyboard. Do me a favor, will you? Press it. Now.

It's only 7/16ths of an inch away from a letter you used 5 times... yeah.

Do you play drums?

But my statement was not visually displeasing. Only the content could be deemed offensive. Not that I particulary care.
Do you play drums?
Sometimes. I've always had a kit around and figured it out myself. Finally bought one a couple years ago after we kicked out our drummer and couldn't find a new one. I played drums for a few months and got decent enough to play a few gigs. Haven't really done much with them since, although the kit is setup downstairs.
Anyways, what's the correlation - cuz in my circle that's an insult? :D :)

My dearest is a drummer. He used to be in a band, but now just jams on the weekend with some other talented audiophiles with real desk jobs.
Do you play "mainstream" music? I think mainstream music used to be better than it is now. Pop music (think The Beatles) can parlay into something groundbreaking.
Nah. I don't play "mainstream" music per se, although some songs do have that "mainstream, pop" sound at times.
Sure, pop can parlay into anything. Still, I find the current state of the industry pretty disheartening and I think some major changes need to happen before we see anything revolutionary, like the Beatles, again.

Most definitely. Too many J's not looking at the big picture and overanalyzing the business side of the industry can do that. There must be a database of popular base lines, etc... and a program that just mixes and matches, adds some voice layering, and a machine drummer for today's popular hits. Blech... Can someone tell me why the hell Hoobastank (aptly named) is popular and why they have a deal with Yahoo Messenger (you can use them as an audible smilie!)?
Okay, one lame joke:
"Mom, when I grow up, I want to be a drummer."
His mother scoffs and replies...
"Well, you can't do both."
Drummers are cool. :D

Quite. I love being one. You know that yellow plastic tape stuff that says "Police Line, Do Not Cross, repeat..." I have some that says "Drum Line, Do Not Cross" I always thought Ringo was the coolest Beatle, too...
The reason they have a deal with Yahoo... [stooge accent] Merchandising! [/stooge accent] (I ain't gonna attempt spelling it like it sounds... but you know the sound bite I'm talking about, or should...)
How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Don't they have a machine for that now?
I don't like music that pretends like it has a drummer, but I can see why it was neccesary in some cases. Some of the mainstream bands still have damn good drummers, though...

But why only them and Madonna... are they really that popular? blech..
You are a drummer, too? Cool.
I love John Bonham and Keith Moon.
Does Popular music even have real drummers anymore (I mean anyone not influenced by a lame 90's drummer)?

Hmm... I don't know. Some of the punk bands seem to be ok... Green Day, Offspring... but I don't keep up with anything really "popular". Usually whatever's on the radio... but I don't listen to the radio much. I have my own little library... scratch little.

I agree here too. Pop has no boundaries but that one usually must be able to dance to it (meaning, there's always a straight beat), and it's so refreshing to escape that I-IV-V.
I'm one of those who likes Madonna as well, especially her initial material. She had some great bassists lay tracks for her - Anthony Jackson, Victor Bailey...
This (http://www.prodikeys.com/products/prodikeys_DM/watch/5_Drums_Low.wmv) is Rock and Roll. :D

Good stuff. There's an song by Blue Man Group that makes fun of the things that people do at concerts... categorizes them and stuff. Basic Head Bob, One-Armed Fist Pump, Up and Down Jumping Motion... you get the idea.

Me too!
I own all of her albums, but American Life is my favorite. It's interesting to note that it's her least commercially successful, but contains some of her deepest material.
I went to one of the concerts on her Reinvention Tour- it was incredible.
