View Full Version : INTPs & Learning Styles

I'm just wondering if there is any particular learning style dominant amongst INTPs. I'm sure most have at least heard of visual, auditory, and tactile learning styles, right? Anyway, here's an online test to be sure that we're judging from the same standards:

Learning Styles Online Quiz (http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/questions.asp)

My results:
Visual - 15
Aural - 12
Verbal - 7
Physical - 10
Logical - 9
Social - 7
Solitary - 15

(social/solitary were not included in the poll because they measure something different about learning styles)

social/solitary aren't in the poll because even if you do have a strong preference for one, you are still going to be using one of the other ways to actually do the learning. It's likely that everyone will have a very high score in either social or solitary. Being a forum full of introverts, most of us will probably have a high solitary score.

If you tie, you can choose which learning style you prefer. I think that many people will have very close scores in at least a couple because most people incorporate more than one method to learning. Some are just used more often than others.

OK I see the problem. They screwed up their page encoding (probably similar to what fc encountered). At one point I jumped from page 6 to 1 using the next button, then used goto to get back to page 7. So it took only the last 2 pages of answers.

Set the option to ALL for number of questions per page and got this:

I don't agree with the categories. It seems like Social, Solitary, and Logical supplement the first 4 (or the first 4 supplement the last 3, depending on if you're S or N) and "aural" and "verbal" should be combined into "auditory".

Here is an Excel chart with INTP learning styles. I think I agree that the categories aren't right, that verbal and aural are similar, and that logical and solitary aren't exactly on the same level with the other categories. To me, it should only have three categories, visual, aural, physical. Or perhaps, there should be one chart with solitary, social, one chart with logical, intuitive, one chart with the visual, aural, physical (hands on) styles, that separation would make more sense.

I think the only reason my social is high at all is because I find talking about issues can be very informative and lead to different results than if I simply think through an issue internally. I like to do both quite a bit, although I definitely think through things much more often than talk about them.

My visual deficiency is something I've known about for a long time. I think that either my terrible visual learning is because of me being such a huge 'N', or my huge 'N' is caused by my terrible visual learning style. I'm not sure which =)

Yes, my visual score is abysmal. But I seriously don't have much talent at all for working in real space. The questions were focused on concrete expressions of visualization... My mind can't do anything of the sort. I use 'images' constantly in my thinking, but they're really just arrays of abstract, metaphorical impressions... I've been completely unable to translate these things into any concrete medium so far. Trying to sketch what I 'see' is nothing but a highly frustrating exercise because I just can't divide physical spaces properly... The perceptions are muddled, attributes just don't correlate... But I seem to be straying from topic, as is typical for me.

Overall, the test hits pretty close. My verbal score ought to be a bit higher, at least a match for aural, but I've always had trouble with self-expression which cuts the score a bit. The rest of it matches well.

I had already started to notice that I'm a bit of an oddity among INTPs with regard to living in the physical world. I have a lot of hobbies that involve mechanical skills, yet I find my mind going in all directions when I work with my hands. It's like a gateway or something.

I find the distinction between Aural and Verbal to be interesting. I don't learn well when people blather on when trying to teach me something. Write it down, let me read it, and I'll do much better. But sounds and music are a big, BIG part of my life. I can remember tunes and sounds really easily, and have tons of songs floating around in my head. I remember lyrics well, but really have a thing for rhythm. Years as a bass player probably has something to do with that.

Also, music (like smells) is a big emotional trigger. Not too long ago, I lost a good friend of mine to cancer. I find myself pulling out old cassettes and going back to experiences that I had with him. It's like I'm back there again, in both an experiental and emotional way.

Finally, I think it's interesting to note the similarities and differences within a set of INTP (and similar) MBTI types. There is a never-ending amount of subtlety in the world (thank goodness!).

I was thinking of this the other day during a string of meetings at work. The managers provided an outline, but then just talked for hours at a time. So those who are big VERBAL learners will do fine, but for those of us who are not, we're sitting there with our eyes glazing over. I want to tell them that it's fine to want to talk about it, but they should consider other (additional) forms of communicating their message.

I think most of the 'logical' questions are focused on whether you like science and math and stuff like that, but I really don't do well in those, though science is very intriguing to me.. I like theories and concepts more than raw data. Both of those can be logical.

Ah well, I probably messed up the test anyway :P

I don't see any surprises here. Low "physical" was an especially obvious one in my case.

Definitely verbal. Words, words, words. In college and grad school I would take notes while reading, then type up the notes, review the notes, etc.

Funny I'm tied for social vs. solitary. Makes sense I think, I like a combo. Must read and contemplate alone, but always liked class discussions and study groups as well.

I was confused by the question "You either hate or love roller coasters". I put 2 because I try not to be apathetic about most things but still, weird.

Also I was surprised that my physical was higher than my logical, but the logic section seemed like it was mostly related to math so uh, that doesn't surprise me anymore.

Hey, it's me....;)

I came out extremely low on physical considering how often I demand to handle something myself when doing/learning. I often can't wait for the kinetic learning "feeling"....especially with something on a computer and the keyboard. I have to be in the command chair and get my fingers to absorb the memories of what I learned.

Same. But after thinking about it, it is likely the combination of being told, seeing it and going through the experience which strengthens the learning.

What's that?

It was a classroom project at my elementary school in California, in the early 1970's, where first, second and third grade students were all combined into three classrooms which were joined together, and we could move freely from one to another and were responsible for our own studies. There was the art room, reading room and the math and science room. it was all hands on and the teachers were there for a little guidance and to make sure kids were accomplishing something. There were little niches here and there where you could go off by yourself or a small group to work or think or study or come up with a project etc. There was a basic structure to it but mostly we were given free reign. It was awsome.

So, visual/physical/logical... confirmation bias perhaps. I would describe it as 'topological.' I notice placement.

I think it would be interesting to create new learning styles out of combinations of them. As in, highlighting the similarities between certain ones. For example, someone who is verbal and logical may be ...linear? Or maybe codified?
