Which distro ?
I mostly hear Gentoo, Slackware and Fedora.
I would get into Linux more but I need my computer for work.. and.. well.. I can't just format my computer for a day to get it to work. I use putty/ssh a lot at work so I'm not unfamiliar with unix commands.

I generally use SuSE (http://www.suse.com), as its the distro I'm most familliar with, but I've also used Mandrake (http://www.mandrakesoft.com). I'd recomend SuSE, if only for the intuitive setup program - lets you do what you want, how you want, which is the strength ofLinux (in my humble opinion)

I got SuSE just for my SPARC processors; but for an x86 I'd go with Red Hat releases.

Hijack This (http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/) - help to remove ActiveX specific spyware

My g/f's virus scan picked that up as a virus on her comp...

Anyway, I have to sugest AVG Anti-Virus (http://www.grisoft.com/) for Windows boxes. Been using it for a couple years, good, solid software that's free and doesn't hog resources like McAfee.

Zone Alarm is one of the best free firewalls I've ever come across. It lets you choose on a case by case basis what is allowed access out from the inside and what isn't.
For spyware and malware removal, I recommend Ad-Aware. It works for me.
You can get these on http://www.download.com/

I use Gentoo, and it's rock stable -- if you know what you're doing. If you don't want that burden, use Suse.

Killer app: Evolution -- runs my life
My desktop: GNOME -- my porridge, just right
Choice development platform: Python (w/ Gnome bindings) -- best thing since sliced bread

Windows XP is pretty good free software.

That would depend on how you define 'good'; and on how you define 'free', since the cost is factored into the sale of your computer.

I think he was talking about this version of Windows, "Windows XP Pro.iso", and I'm pretty sure he builds his own system..

I'm puzzled then. Why would anyone given a choice of a costless OS throw themselves back into the morass of Redmond ?

I think I would because it's still easier to use. Plus I have a copy so cost isn't an issue. Given another year or two though the costs will probably outweigh the benefits.

more free stuff:
AVP: free antivirus program
Ad aware: free antispyware program
Spybot S&D: another free spyware program (complement each other well)

For Windows then:

Already done this in here, but:
Jarte_Homepage (http://www.jarte.com/news.html?referrer=_2000)
tabbed notepad WP.

Empty_Temp_Folders (http://www.danish-shareware.dk/soft/emptemp/index.html)
& other stuff from that author.

Copernic Agent Basic (http://www.copernic.com/)
For web-searching, though they nag you to buy.

Will think of others later.

I run ad-aware, spybot, and spysweeper. I think spysweeper is the only one I paid for, but I get them all mixed up. When my computer got completely screwed a few months ago with some trojan horse, ad-aware was the only one that could get rid of it, so I like that one.

Good software for Windows:
Linux (http://www.linux.com/), followed by a swift deletion of the windows partition.

Yeah, I'm biased. So what?

Zoom Player (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml)

This has become my primary video player. I didn't even bother installing divx this time when I reinstalled windows. Also, if you ever wondered why you can't take screenshots in many windows media players, it's because they use video overlay. It's a small detail but I like that I can disable it with zoom player.

it's more hardcore  but I've never used the Zoom player so I shouldn't really be commenting.

I like zoom player because it is tiny and fast (and still has all the options I need).... it plays all the formats I have, but I still installed codecs. I don't like that the k-lite site won't even tell what is in their packages until after you sign up.
