View Full Version : The hated subject: Anime/Manga

Anime: Japanese animation, ie. Spirited Away
Manga: Japanese comics, ie. Inuyasha

You can go ahead and list your favorites, but I would like to say that some of this stuff is really not worth reading/seeing (although some of it is amusing); I am a fan of Hayao Miyazaki's works, specially Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind.
I also prefer manga to anime, because the storyline and art, to me, is generally better.

Gundam Wing is my ultimate favorite anime series, more for the plot than for the mecha, but, it was still good. Out of manga, I like: Parasite, Pet Shop of Horrors, Inuyasha, Nausicaa, aside from most of CLAMP's works.

How about you?

I like Cowboy Bebop a lot and I usually catch Trigun whenever it's on, but other than that I don't watch much anime

I think you nailed it with "the hated subject". LOL.

I just don't get this stuff for the most part. It's wierd to the point of being discoherent if you ask me.

I saw Spirited Away, and it was OK, but it's supposed to be a masterpiece of the genre as I understand it. I saw another one that is supposedly famous, the english dubbing was all done by famous actors. Can't recall the name but it involved an enchanted forest and wild boars and the like. Again, it left me asking "What's all the fuss?"

Anime is usually awesome visually. Plot and characterwise however....

And I understand Japanese society better than the average gaijin.

Kurosawa makes sense. Why can't anime?

Princess Mononoke, most likely. Like I said, some of it isn't worth your time. I like it mostly because of the art and the originality, but not everyone does, and that's ok ^_^

I like the movie Spirited Away. I did not like Akiria or Ninja Scroll. Jinroh was okay. that's about all I've seen.

I like most anime , I can't really say I have any favorites though.

Dammit.... I am trying to find the name of this one anime game on the Play Station 2.
It was his fighting game and when you did certain special moves you would see a short animation and they would do there stuff. All anime characters...

A schoolgirl with a sword. One of her moves would be to jump in the air, duplicate herself into three and then attack the person with all three characters.

A guy in a buisness suit who would draw a pentagram in the air while would then produce magical red missles that would hit you.

People with rockets etc etc... dammit what was it called?

I like anime. I'd never seen much before last year but my bf dragged me to a showing at his college's anime club -- and I'm totally hooked. Personally I can't understand why some people don't like it (and I understand there's bad stuff out there, that's obvious, the same with any genre) but that's just me. Some people have this weird anti-anime thing ... its very odd when you consider HOW MCUH anime there is. Saying you don't like anime is like saying you don't like books or movies. Which books? Which movies?

Anyway, some of my favorite series:

Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm so fanatically addicted to this. I could probably actually sit down and watch all 26 episodes (and the movie) in one sitting and not get bored.
Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Very hilarious.
Wolf's Rain. A little bit melodramatic but addictive.
Serial Experiments Lain. (That's Lain in my avatar.)
Witch Hunter Robin.
Cowboy Bebop.
Ah! My Goddess
Azumanga Daioh. I just started watching this a couple weeks ago. Hysterical.

Of movies - Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, The Cat Returns, End of Evangelion, etc

I like some anime.. three series in particular.

Cowboy bebop- awesome music, awesome animation, interesting plots (from ep to ep)
Trigun- funny, good animation, just interesting and fun to watch. Also Legato kicks ass.

The best though, is.. *drumroll*

Boogiepop Phantom- AMAZINGLY complex plotline, I love the music (not everyone does, but I -adore- it), and the graphics, while not shiny and pretty like a lot of anime, it fits the series perfectly. I highly recommend picking this up. :)

Anime/manga is definately worth experiencing for me. I got into it in my freshman year of college just because the artwork appealed to me, but it intrigued me and inspired me to learn Japanese, study the culture, and study abroad there. In the long run, it opened my mind to global issues, and it continues to be a source of study material for me, along with Japanese PS games, online news articles, and magazines.

My favorites include:

Movies: Miyazaki stuff ("Spirited Away", Mononoke Hime, Nausicca, Laputa, Ponpoku, etc.), Ghost in the Shell
Series: Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Hikaru no Go, Ganmu, Cowboy Bebop, Patlabor, Maison Ikkoku, Fushigi Yuugi, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Games: Final Fantasy series (particularly VI, VII, IX and X) =P

I also agree, dubbing is hideous. Translation is at times bad enough. :(

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

*ahem*

Myself, I like Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Vandread, Nadesico, Captain Tylor, Azumanga Daioh and a few others.

Anime is great stuff. Better than the crap they put on TV here that runs for 8 years without anything interesting happening.

EDIT- oh yes, as of now, that's Evangelion Unit-01 in my avatar. Booyah.

I got sick of anime after Robotech and Akira.
Loved them both, but the obsession of some people borders on unholy.
When the mainstream moves in on my territory, I go seeking greener pastures.

Robotech isn't even anime technically...it's the bastardization of three seperate series from Japan.

And yes, some people are far too obsessed.

But don't give up on it please! Even if it's trying to be more mainstream anime still needs you support!

Some of the more recent anime I've gotten off of fansubs via BitTorrent:

Hunter x Hunter
Naruto
One Piece
Samurai Champloo
Hajimee no Ippo
Hellsing
Fooly Cooly (FLCL)
Condor Hero
Full Metal Alchemist

There's been a wave of these philosophically-centered anime that are pretty addicting. Naruto- very epic, that thing I feel missing from my life.
Bleach isn't too bad either, but it's more dragonballesque. Not that cool fighting scenes and comedy aren't bad; I liked Dragonball and I like AzumangaDaioh. Oh yes... GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka); he's a guy to look up to indeed.

by far the best anime ever is Digi Charat

it makes Godfather look like a bunch of toddlers contemplating with their bullshit philosophies that no one cares about

Candy Candy (dunno if it qualifies an as anime, it was made after a book), Sailor Moon, DBZ (much better than DB), Lady Oscar, Macron 1, and many more.

Cowboy Bebop is nothing short of an awesome anime, and I think it is much more western-friendly than some other rather weird ones. I've watched a little Trigun and liked it, but I haven't been able to catch up on it. I used to like Naruto [before it came to America] and I enjoyed it for a good while, but once it became American it largely lost it's flavour for me, I'm not sure why. I liked DBZ up to the Cell Saga [Buu and onward just got increasingly more retarded, IMO], and DB was actually pretty awesome as well minus the completely retarded parts. I liked some of the older Gundam shows, but I never got much into Gundam Wing [Though I did like the Endless Waltz movie]. Manga was alright, but I never really bought any because I could finish a volume just sitting down at Books-a-million for a little while. I read DB mostly, but I lost interest in manga. I wouldn't mind watching some more Cowboy Bebop and Trigun though, as far as anime is concerned.

Did I mention I love anime?

All-time favs: One Piece, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Outlaw Star, Heat Guy J

Currently watching/reading - all RECOMMENDED: GTO, Hana Yori Dango (the live action TV series of both of these ROCK!), Deathnote (have read the manga, seen anime and both movies), and manga of Crimson Hero

... sometimes it goes all weird on me (end of Trigun, all of Arjuna, etc.) but in general anime is 4 me.

anything big-budget enough to be exported to american cable television or theaters is usually worth a try, but even half of that is horrible crap that i wouldn't watch drunk.

really loving anime is utterly beyond me. animation is cool and stuff but

*examines post dates* god damn it kathara why didn't you just let sleeping dogs lie.

Favourites (in order):

1. The Mysterious Cities of Gold (virtually unknown 80's anime. A totally original classic that seamlessly blends South American history at the time of the Spanish Conquistadors with von Daniken-esque ancient technology).

2. Dragonball Z (2 characters battle and destroy an entire planet? Tough to beat that!)

3. Bleach (lots of character development and political intrigues)

I also like (in no particular order):

Naruto
Full Metal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun

Samurai Champloo really did it for me. When looking at the series as a whole, its hard to criticise.

Ghost in the Shell, 1 + 2. I've never witnessed movies that provoked that much thought.

Afro Samurai was quite entertaining.

Holy crap this thread is old!

Candy Candy is a classic and it's just good.

Samurai Champloo was great, I was watching Claymore but got nightmares so decided not to anymore >_>...I am not sure about the new Gundam series, like Destiny and whatnot, I recently saw Tales from Earthsea or something and didn't find it that interesting...what is up with Miyazaki...

I'm a Miyazaki fan, I don't want him to retire...

Oh, and Wolf's Rain is now up there with GW for me I guess, it's been a long time.
