View Full Version : Olympic Coverage

Well, I never started a topic in the old forum, so I figured my first post here should start with a little umph. Alright, very little...
At this point constructing a poll to judge interest would be too ambitious for me, but I was curious as to the Olympic coverage in your area, since we have a world population registered.
Here in America, NBC has paid gazillions for the broadcast rights. They will have hundreds of hours of coverage of the Summer Olympics, which they will divy out to a few other TV stations to be shown in the US, such as MSNBC (Microsoft co-owner) and Univision (Spanish Language). However, their coverage of events or athletes who are not American is next to non-existant. :o
Granted, you gotta cover the locals, but these are world games. How are the games covered where you live?
In the past, NBC would tape delay the more popular events to show during prime time (night time, after dinner). Which I equate to serving leftovers at a wedding. :x (I'm sorry, should this be in Flame thrower?) Not only that, but they won't release the footage to other stations to repeat or air as news broadcasts. NBC also wouldn't re-broadcast footage themselves, so if you missed a world record setting event, you missed it.
What are some of the good & bad of coverage where you are? What would you do to improve them? :?: :?: :?:

Well, I'm going to have NBC cover the Olympics also, but I like the primetime feature events because I might not be at home in the middle of the day.
I really only care about swimming, but I would love to have more coverage of swimmers that are not outside the US. Although I don't know whether swimming will be considered "popular"

I think the Olympic coverage sucks. They never show anything that doesnt have an american participating. They then proceed to cut the event off when the Americans lose. I think they stop with the lame attempt to cover the olypics and start actually covering them. There are more events that the ones the americans are good at. Also there is an excess of the feel good history BS that they tend to harrass the viewer with. I honestly dont care about the life story of every American competing, and would much prefer to see more live events.
Its even worse during the winter when I have to stay 3am to watch curling.
NBC sucks at broadcasting the olympics and there is very little they do good.

Not only is it tiresome, but if the athlete didn't grow up an orphan, abused by alcoholic, crystal meth pushers, then NBC will try to make it seem as if they were. "Peggy Sue is here in Athens despite her mother over sleeping the morning of the Olympic trials. Luckily, she was able to dodge traffic and get to the arena on time, surviving any near-fatal accident she might've been in had her mom over slept any longer and would've had to driven faster to get to the arena."
The fact that an athlete's in the Olmpics competing pretty much solidifies the over-coming all obstacles and beating the odds stories.
Ever hear of a comedian named Franklin Ajaye? He's got a great bit about the best competition at the Olympics is the battle to see who's going to finish last in the marathon.

Now don't you sound familiar... <_<
That is a painful topic, folks. I try to forget about the Olympics that are just around the corner, this city will be true hell for those that live here permanently...

haha, so true. and if it's not that then it's the doping scandals in track and field.
swimming is one of my favorites to watch.
Vags, you should rent out your place for $2000/week. You'd get it for sure. It would lessen the hell for you. Or, at least, it would for me. :)

To be needlessly cruel...
We'll give back the Marbles as soon as you have a government that doesn't destroy part of an ancient temple-site to build some rotten arena.

( Actually our's would build an airport on top of Stonehenge if the price was right & they could get away with it. :D ).

I have never liked the summer olympics, I will watch some if I am flipping through the channels and happen upon a competition.
The winter olympics are different though, I have stayed up all night so I can watch the hockey games.

I had a roommate from Montreal and we'd bet on the US/Canada match up. I think in '98 the game started at close to midnight. US had a five-on-three powerplay for close to two minutes and Roy turned away everything in net. I just quitely laid my money on the table and went to bed at that point. Taking the phrase literally "don't lose sleep over it" because I knew at that point there was no way they were going to win.
I actually remember setting my schedule around watching the Team Canada selection show back for the Salt Lake City Games. Again losing money in the US/Canada game, although I wasn't surprised. I was a little upset to learn that the Canadian firm who installed the ice put a Looney (is that what they're called?) under center ice.
Every time I watch Olympic or playoff hockey, I feel a little dirty for the time and money I spend watching some regular season NHL games and how meaningless the players can treat them.
I probably lean more towards the Summer Games with the track & field events being my favorite.
then it's the doping scandals in track and field.
Doping does taint the games more so than pro sports. It's harder to know who's on what or if someone's clean or not. I also like women's balance beam - pretty amazing. As well as women's ice skating. The diving creeps me out because they come so close to hitting their heads. On the other hand, boxing is high on my list for favorite Olympic sports. Go figure.

LOL Claverhouse :D
I prefer you destroy the marbles than we do - then everyone would kick *your* ass and we'd be totally innocent... ;P
