This post of mine more or less qualifies as derailing, I think, but here goes anyway:

In addition to the control channel that connects to port 21 on the server, FTP opens a separate connection for file transfer and directory listings. Normally this connection is done from the server to your computer (so for that connection the client's computer acts as the server, opening a dynamically assigned port that the FTP server can connect to). There is an extension to the FTP protocol known as "passive mode" which turns this around, essentially telling the server to open another port so that the client can connect to that one for file and directory transfers. When you're on a local network (eg. 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x) passive mode is usually your only choice. How to activate passive mode depends on your FTP client (assuming it supports that, but it probably does). Some newer clients detect this automatically.
