Hello all. I found out I was an INTP a year or two ago, but recently went on another internet time wasting quiz binge and confirmed it again. Been obsessivley reading about it to keep my mind off another boring phase of my job (until I get something new), and also away from the incredible timesink that is City of Heroes (an MMORPG). Also recently started posting to a friends forum so I'm trying to keep up the habit and not be such a lurker. Please excuse any misspellings as I tend to try to force myself to go to bed with THC, thought this is at best a poor excuse for my lazy spelling. Ok now I'm rambling. Peace!

Wow you're fast I wasn't expecting theese until tomorrow.

Sweet, now I can put off bed (doh!)

I'm a computer software tester but I'd rather be a developer (working on it), or maybe a writer or a physicist if I could handle the math (I seem to enjoy reading about physics much more that doing it ) :)

I'm from NYC but moved upstate 5 years ago for my job. I would also rather be back in NYC. :P

sounds boring... for what kind of apps ?? I don't like doing QA type stuff... but it's necessary...

> but I'd rather be a developer (working on it)
which language(s) ?

I lived in Nyack, NY when I was young child. What cities/towns are considered upstate(Rochester, Buffalo, etc.) ?

Having to learn the different software is cool and trobleshooting is ok, but eventually it starts to work and you know how it works but don't really have a use for it so it does get boring untill you move to something new. Right now it's mostly in server infrastructure management application testing.

> but I'd rather be a developer (working on it)

Java C++ primarily. Though I'm also finding design is also interesting. So I guess UML though thas not really a programming language,

When you're from NYC, everything north of Westchester is upstate. I live about two hours away. Far enough to go on weekends only. Probably hasn't helped me adjust since I just see my nyc friends on the weekend and live like a hermit during the week...

so have you written any apps yourself.. or how did you get involved in being a software tester? A lot of people say they want to go to NYC to either live or visit. I always find this humorous... like it will be some life altering experience(maybe it will be if you drive a car...).

With the exception of school projects I havent written any signifigant programs. I just don;t have the motivation to do it if it not "my job". I always worked much better with some kind of deadline. Once I have that, I put it off until the last minute, then bang it out ASAP.

I became a tester when I got the job as graduate from college. I was too lazy to look for another job, the pay was good, and I only had to move 2 hours away. To be honest I only really regret the moving part. My social life has been the biggest adjustment. Probably because I'm slow to make friends but am still good friends with guys from high school, lol.

For me it more about homesickness I guess. Though I will say I've never been anywhere like NYC (in my limited experience). I'm a city boy and every other city feels like a strip mall. Just the fact that you need a car to get anywhere in a lot of cities takes getting used to.

I understand...

it is one of a kind...but not all exceptions are good. my car remark was trying to point out how much is spent in a car especially during rush hour but I did a poor job at elaborating on my point.

how did you react to 9/11 ? are you for or against the war? who are you going to vote for? I had never heard of NYC being called the City of Heroes? is it a result of 9/11?

Hehe, City of Heroes is a video game ( a Massivley Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) that I have been badly addicted to for the last couple of monthes.

>it is one of a kind...but not all exceptions are good. my car remark was trying to point out how much is spent in a car especially during rush hour but I did a poor job at elaborating on my point.

Yeah not all exceptions are good. I would just rather be there than where I am now. As for the car thing that only applies to Manhattan at rush hour. For manhattan the trains are your best bet for getting around during the day.

>9/11
maybe I'll get into this later

> the war
Against it but now that we are there we need international help.

> vote for?

Sorry FC

City of Heroes is a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). I use these for escape from daily life. Don't be ashamed Boozer, I've logged thousands of hours within different cyberscapes and I find it therapeutic. Just make sure they don't become a substitute for real life experiences. It's likely that you'll become bored with it soon anyway. Is it your first MMORPG?

Welcome to the board.

It is my first MMORPG for the PC. I played and got my friends into Phantasy Star Online for a while.

I'm starting to get bored of it but I've started new more challenging chars so that has helped. Plus a couple RL friends are into it so that helps too. This might not make sense to those who never played but for the curious my main is a blaster that Im getting bored of (lvl 37 fire/devices) but my new fav is a controller (28 illusion/radiation).

As for the suvstituting for my for RL... I have a bad habit of finding something to do that... TV, computer, books, movies, poker.

At least the poker is kinda social. (Note the useful skills of emotionlessness, lol)

Wow...a fellow poker player. Poker is truly an INTP exercise, live and online. I have been quite successful playing online. Although I had to stop playing online since the wife found out it's a felony in my state. <_<

I played online on PS under the same moniker.

I played online obsessivley for a while until I felt I was decent. But I started getting a little lax and losing money. It'ss too easy to just click yes for me. So I only play offline now. Forces me to be more social. Plus I feel like I play better offline and my poker logs seem to agree :)

I think it might be because I don't want to look dumb so I'm a little more conservative (which is good). Plus I've gotten confident enough now that Ive gone from being a tight passive player to a tight agressive one. I think you might be right about INTP having advantages. I'm not a computational whiz but I'm good at estimating and that's enough to help. I also have a good poker face most of time, due to my natural detachment and desire to be a silent observer. I think some weaknesses are a tendency to overanalyze and miss tells from people from too much inward thought. I can also get on tilt (play while angry=bad) when the the poker gods give me a bad beat (losing despite the odds being in your favor when the money went in). Though I think my tilt tendency has been reduced with practice. After a while you just begin to recognize the symptons. I tend to get red faced and clam up, analyze what I did wrong then mutter what I should have done. That's a nother weakness I have a tough time not turning into a "teacher" when I fell I am one of the stronger players at the table. Only when threatened do I do the right thing and stay quiet

If your online picture was Boozer written out on a white background with the o's drawn as eyes, then I remember you. I played against you quite a bit in the $10-$30 tourneys.

Live play affords us a lot more opportunity with tells and for using our observation, analyzation, and intuition skills. Although I was able to regularly read some players online, usually the weaker ones. I don't play much anymore because I prefer tourneys with slow structures so skill becomes important. Most of the tourneys in my geographical area are promotional crapshoots to try to get people in the door for the ring games, no real skill will help.

It's a great hobby if you can stay on track, profitable and constantly challenging.

Welcome to the Site.

I'm an FPS player and my husband got me into a few years RPG's. I'll probably be playing the MMORPG's soon.

Jeebus, fc, your posts are like lighting.

RPG's...I am part of some, well, one online chatting one...but I have truly lost the zest for it...now I just don't know myself anymore, heh.

I used to be a big pen and paper RPG'er but my weekends are so busy (visiting friends in NYC) that I don't usually have the time or energy. Thats why the online ones have been so fun, you get to figure out some complex system withut all the effort of being the GM (which I usually was).

I used to be more into regular RPG's but they get boring, no replay value, AI still sucks. Online helps a lot beacause people are hard to predict, but then you have the problem that lots of people are dumb, ahh life can be cruel... :p

Also: I used to play online on PartyPoker as Sandman420, but now I just play in home games with coworkers

Oh my. My life used to be bound up with the weekly clunks of a couple of heavy pre-paid envelopes tripping through the letterbox, detailing the latest moves and missives of wargame campaigns set in the past. The best was one called Peralos, set on a mythical semi-european continent in 1000AD. I played the innately lovable Charles, King of the Franks. *

Then they just faded, partly through time, depression, other things etc.; made some friends though. :D

Ah, memories.

* The Franks are German, not French, in real life. Just happened to have occupied what was to be France. And Germany. And part of Italy. And a few other places, beside.

That sounds interesting, though I'm probably too impatient for games by mail
