Those various devices that claims to "purify" tap water
- are they any good? Anyone have tried yet?

I haven't had time to research this type of water purification, but I have seen some of these units that they put a brine solution in the water. I believe it then zaps the water with a very high voltage. I think? It claimed to kill anything biological including viruses if I recall correctly. I was thinking about getting one for backpacking, since they are a very compact and light unit. I suppose it might not filter out any inert particles very well thought...

Oh, I missed the tap water part... But in case you were interested I will leave it in..

I bought my parents a PUR tap water filter for Christmas last year. Not sure if that is any better than the rest. Of course I believe the top of the line in tap water purification is a Reverse Osmosis system. However, I have heard some people say that those also take some of the "good" minerals out of the water as well.

Some are probably pretty good.

Beware of that 'magnetic' crap, though.

Depends on where you live nad what you local pipes are like. Something that annoys me is all the people who come to melbourne (one of the best places to drink tap water in the world) from singapore (not one of the best) who drink from teh tap at home but over here they feel the need to filter AND boil it.

I don't understand!

Generally people are pretty good at not getting poisoned by relatively clean water. Filters and bottled water are mainly just money making scams (at least in melbourne)
