View Full Version : the best sense of humor

I'm not sure if this is a pattern, but among my INTP friends (and people on this board), I have found that, if all of the types, INTPs have the best, driest, most intellignent sense of humor.
Perhaps this is only my perception (b/c i'm INTP)... Also, we're hilarious, but only around those close to us. Aquaintences probably assume that I'm shy and serious all of the time. But at home, my SJ family often tells me to "stop being sarcastic", or "this isn't the time for jokes [a funeral]", or "can't you ever be serious"?
Maybe it's the NTP combination...?

Sarcasm sucks.

I get taken far more seriously than I usually am. We appear serious, lost in thought and paying no attention to how we look, but I think "appropriate feelings and demeanor for the occasion" are probably more of an SJ sort of thing. I get told I'm funny or have a great sense of humor a lot. I think part of the key is the way we find funny things (and the way we find things funny.) I guess it's come up that it frequently involves inconsistencies in language, puns, double entendre, sarcasm etc. So it's not really "intelligent humor" like "so then he said, 'why can't you just fix the warpdrive with a hammer?' HAHAHAHA!" kind of way but more like, our critical nature tends to lead us to find intelligent inconsistencies others may not spot but can still appreciate.
All of that drivel is to say, I'm not sure I'd call the humor itself intelligent, but it might apply to where/how we tend to find it--and we're successful at it because we aren't the only ones finding it funny, while we're also usually stating something many didn't notice. At least, I think.

I guess it's an individual thing.
I know an ISTP who takes about 3 years to "get" the simplest joke...
I love INTP humor. One reason I married my spouse is that he makes me laugh, heartily and daily. :)
I've read that INTPs tend to be very adept at puns and wordplay and that sort of humor, which happens to be my favorite kind.

"best" is pretty subjective, but if I may speculate:
humor is an individual preference, but for the sake of argument let's be democratic and say that the best sense of humor is the humor that the most amount of people like. Let's also say (although probably not usually true) personalities only like one type of humor - the humor of the same personality type. For example ESFJs only like the sense of humor of other ESFJs. By this logic INTPs have the worst sense of humor since we are like the most uncommon temperament.
By no means am I saying this line of logic is correct, but god knows it's the only possible way I can come to terms with the fact that "Yes, Dear" is enjoying a sixth season of production. (It's Not Funny)

Most people don't see my sense of humor, so I wouldn't say it is particularly "good."

i dont know if id say were the funniest, if i had to guess id say entp, but i agree that we can be pretty hilarious people, id also agree that we only show this side to people were comfortable with, as to those who say only other INTPs get our humor iid disagree strongly based on how painfully hard i am able to make other people (non INTPs) laugh
also im not sure if id call our humor the most intelligent as opposed to the most pretentious but i would agree that a large part of our humor is derived from simply taking things out of context

Yeah - I do think NT's have a unique sense of humor being that we see things from a more global perspective... also artisans too share this perspective as they are out of the box.
I have enjoyed the humor of the people here and have been amazed at the intellectual depth of the material in the humor.
Funny you mentioned the funeral humor - sometimes we do see things as humorous in what others consider inappropriate situations.

The two people I know that make me laugh the hardest are both ENTP's - I very rarely laugh though. If I've heard a joke before, even in another incarnation, it has lots it's appeal to me. And a lot of people nowadays just steal jokes from the simpsons. It's rare to meet someone who can come up with something funny on their own that isn't an adaptation of a joke they've heard before. Of course, humor is entirely subjective. Umbrosia makes a good point.
