I was just wondering...
Is being INTP determined by genetics, environment, or both?

It may be determined by the sexual position chosen to conceive you: that's what you wanted to hear, wasn't it ?

What if it is that, it's sort of fascinating to think personality could be determined like that, and revolutionary for psychology, yet it's kind of creepy to think that all of our parents were having sex in the same position.
Now, I'd be naturally curious on what that position was, just in case I ever choose to reproduce; but I am not going to ask that my own parents.

Nope. That's not what I want to hear, and I don't think it's determined
by the sexual position. (though it's interesting to know if there's any
scientific study which investigate about that).
What I do know is that there are specific techniques and sexual positions
that will increase your chance of conceiving a baby
http://www.babycentre.co.uk/refcap/1812.html
a) position: missionary (man on top) and entry from behind
b) make the woman orgasm (helps carry sperm further into the womb)
c) staying in bed for up to half an hour after having sex (for the woman)
- this gives the sperm a helping hand because they're not having to swim
against gravity on their way up to the allopian tubes

Definitely determined by the amount of pickles and peanut butter the woman eats.

I do think it is genetic - but I also think environment influences parts of it intensely.
Example (personal ofcourse)
Mother - ISTJ and SJ
ME - INTJ an NT
Brother #1 - ENFP an NF
Little Brother - ISTP an SP
We are all different - I do not think we would have chosen to be so different from eachother - I can remember trying to teach my brothers how to be more like me (more academic, professional, conservative, ambitious) - both tried but ultimately could not - now I know why (genetics and their permutation). Being related to each other has made us more tolerant and understanding of eachother (eachother's type) . IN contrast I have known people who were only children - and they have a much lower empathy level than those who have siblings (that was the environment part).
I could give more specific details about genetic contributions in our family - pretty convincing ones... if you wanna hear about them - please ask.

Ooooh, I'd say there's a pretty large genetic component, but I'm basing this upon my understanding of nature in the nature/nurture mix.

If this is true, wouldn't it be better for her to stand on her head after having sex?
And if so, can she go and do it in the spare room so I can have some kip with the bed to myself?

I came across a study in which twins that were separated at birth and lived in different enviroments were brought together and examined for personality, IQ, and the like. It came out that the majority of them were VERY similar, even though their enviroments were widely different.

Those identical twin studies are really interesting.
It's really interesting that those twins can have girlfriend with the same name
and named their dogs the same name. Kinda freaky huh?

I'm really curious exactly what, if any, the genetic component is.
My parents: dad ESFJ, mom ISFJ
Never figured out what type my brother is because our relationship was that bad growing up. ISFP maybe?
Me: INTP
Now, I want you to imagine me, a smart little four-year-old NT, being raised by two SJ parents. (NT = need to be intellectually independant and do things my own way, SJ = need to conform, ES_J = need to force conformity on others)
Ugh.
Not just any SJ's either. Both of my parents are not in touch with their own feelings, and both of my parents are bad at logical reasoning, which means that whenever I had a problem they had neither the empathy nor the logical reasoning skills to take a step back and look for underlying problems.
*Ugh.*
Can I have a do-over and do my life over again?

In this kind of a delicate matter you have to use a go-between. A go-between is a trusted person who knows both you and your parents. Since it is Christmas, I throw this one for free.

I suppose we could do an INTP Central experiment that tests how many children born from two INTP parents are INTPs or NTs. That may help indicate to what level type and temperament are genetic.

It's hard to say.
If any trait was inherited, I'd have to guess that it was introversion, since my mother is a really strong introvert. However, I have no idea where my strong T comes from, since both my genes and environment seemed pretty F.
My guess would be that it is something like a genetic template that can be modified to varying degrees depending on the environment. For example, I may have been around F people a lot, but both them and I being introverts allowed me to have a lot of free time to myself with which to explore my own interests [books, learning, arguments, etc.]. Thus the T.
But that's a total guess.

I'm INTP and my wife is ISTP. I think our 7 year old is INTP and our 3 year old is more daring than our older son, so perhaps he's ISTP, or perhaps he's just less N.
