I think I may have found a career that I would not only be able to tolerate, but actually love. That being said, I really don't know anything about it, but here's my impression:

It's philosophical
It's scientific
It involves research, staying on top of all the latest scientific discoveries
It involves policymaking and consulting with politics

Is anyone familiar with careers in bioethics? Is there little or no demand for such jobs? What kind of degree program would one pursue, philosophy, biology, law, a combination?

I suspect that there will be little opportunity to be employed as an bioethicist, since most organizations profile themselves as either rational or ethical but rarely both. Your best shot is an academic career, starting with biology or a flavor of philosophy. If you want to be politically involved, you'll have to be top in your niche and acquire some media presence: they will come to you. Or you could engage yourself in a party now and hope you'll always choose the right sides in the internal conflicts.
