I dunno, but the acceptance rate at my top-5 program was 10%. I had near perfect general GREs, so-so physics GRE, great recommendations (I think) based on undergraduate research, A- GPA in the most difficult physics, math and literature classes at a top undergrad university.
what is ur bachelor's degree, phys also or something else?
Physics (literature was my humanities concentration)
how long does the phd take to acquire?
5-7 years if you don't have a masters, 4-5 if you do (or equivalent).

damn
i am sure i can get a great general gre score and i was thinking of that i could take the phys gre and do well
but u said u got a so-so phys gre, and ur bachelor's is in physics >_>, and ur an intp jus like me
my major is electrical engineering
so doing well in the phys gre for me would be like 'lol' or as a friend said, kinda like playing russian roulette with an uzi, except inside a videogame cuz there wont be any harm done by just trying
i d/led a sample phys gre and it says the % distrib of the problems is
20% CLASSICAL MECHANICS
18% ELECTROMAGNETISM
9% OPTICS AND WAVE PHENOMENA
10% THERMODYNAMICS AND STATISTICAL MECHANICS
12% QUANTUM MECHANICS
10% ATOMIC PHYSICS
6% SPECIAL RELATIVITY
6% LABORATORY METHODS
9% SPECIALIZED TOPICS
For some reason it does not look scary. Maybe I could pull it off.
I know could do well on
CLASSICAL MECHANICS
ELECTROMAGNETISM
SPECIAL RELATIVITY
these add up to 44%
just a little further to get to 100%
what i would be more worried about is my gpa currently it is about 2.1 lol
but if i did well on the phys gre just having taken elementary phys 1 and phys 2 courses then they might be impressed by my obvious curiousity and passion
or not
my life sux0rZ

That's a serious problem, otherwise you'd have a good shot at some middle-tier schools.

A lot of people have kids, with whom they can share the misery

but i want berkeley!
otherwise i just study on my own and become more intelligent than everyone in the world combined and make einstein look unsmart
or i could have kids... lol
Seriously, though, I am going to try. I am hoping the Berkeley people are more careful than to use the GPA as a dominant factor in decisions. My argument that all the classes I have taken have been too easy is true! They must believe me!
If they don't, oh well. ^_^

GPA (w.r.t. class difficulty) is the 2nd biggest factor, behind recommendations/research.

seems like im screwed
i can get recommendations and they will be good ones i think...
i do random research on my own on a random thing here and there
for example, currently i am trying to see if i can abstract tetris
the report thingies i create follow a standard thingie so its not just rambling
speaking of report thingies, i recently found http://www.wolfram.com/products/publicon/
anyway, im prolly screwed in any case
but that don't mean i aint gon try
also
i doubt the school i get the phd at will have any impact on what i learn
especially because i am solely interested in theoretical physics
wait a minute...do the courses have 'laboratory' assignments?
i hate laboratory assignments
as a friend said, 'lets reinvent the wheel...eh...couple hundred times'
i tried to see what phd's they offer but they only seem to have 'physics'

You specialize after the first few semesters. I'm in theory.

A! Good to hear. I have about a year and a half left before I would have to take the GRE. So, I'll start working on it now... lol
