View Full Version : newbie here
hello. :)
i am a female INTP. i'm 22 years old. i study environmental science w/ a concentration in the physical sciences & a minor in physical geography. i suppose that's rather INTP-like. ha. anyway, i wanted to introduce myself and interact with more people who "get" me, for lack of a better term.

Hmm... ok, hi. We have someone on here named "s"... coincidence?
i hadn't even noticed. t's my handle for message boards in general b/c it's a nickname of mine. so, i guess it is a coincidence.

Welcome,
I've always been fascinated by geography, but mostly with people and places and their historical significance. I'm not familiar, however, with physical geography. I assume, by the name, that it studies natural topography. What exactly are the applications of physical geography? Its seems that areas such as soil erosion would be encompassed in it. Or am I way off?
you're not way off. :) i mainly focus on climate change and weather. it's very map based, as you'd expect. but physical geography brings in elements of geology, physics, & chemistry more so than the human aspect of traditional geography. for example, in one of my intro courses, approproately titled "physical geography", we studied topography, structure of the earth, soil, etc. hmm.. it's more asking the question "where is that & what does it affect?". i have the minor because it provides me with all the data analysis and map reading skills that i need to be a meteorologist (or to do research in atmospheric science or climatology).

greetings t, where are you from? are you enjoying school? I don't miss it for the world.
i attend school in north carolina, though i've lived in 3 different states since i was 18. right now i'm actually on a leave of absence from school b/c i needed a change of scenary for a semester to clear my head. as for whether or not i enjoy school - i enjoy learning, but i'm not really one for class. i can teach myself anything i need to learn and i find class pointless. i suppose that sounds kind of arrogant, but i just hate having to sit there and listen to a professor lecture me on material that is written in the textbook and concepts that i already understand. however i am highly interested in my field, probably because it's always changing so there's always something new to figure out. i think this is the only reason i'm going to complete this degree & the second degree that i need to finish before being able to do research.
as you can tell, i can't just give a short answer to a question. sorry about that.

Sorry to hear that you dislike school as much as i do. No its not arrogant to feel like your wasting time being lectured on something you already know. Unfortunately, school revolves around making the proffessor happy. Good think you found something you really enjoy. Welcome to the forums, and im sure youll survive.

Ditto, it seems like school is made for the ESTJ’s and everyone else had to figure out how to fit in
Btw. You’re chosen field sounds fascinating. I'm a weather forecaster for the US military and have always enjoyed physical geography, especially concerning soil variations.
Welcome to the board.
how do you like being a weather forecaster? i ultimately want to go into meteorology... well that or focus in climate research. i've been told i need to complete a bunch of atmospheric science courses in order to do it & since my current school doesn't offer them, i'm going to have to go back for a second degree after this one's completed (and this one's taking me forever). also, how much emphasis is placed on your gpa in college? mine isn't exactly up to par. aaaand do you feel that your personality type helps or hurts you in your field? sorry for all the questions, but i haven't gotten a chance yet to talk to someone who is doing what i wish to do in a few years!

hmm speaking of meteorology, my (INTJ) roommate studied that as a minor at Millersville Univ. up near Lancaster, PA. He has a small weather station in the kitchen that shows outside/inside temp, outside humidity/etc. :)

Welcome!
I got my undergrad degree in Environmental Science but I took the ecology focus. Environmental Science is a great undergrad degree as you can get exposure to so many different science disciplines like meteorology and geology.
What are you planning on majoring in for the second degree?
i plan on getting my second degree in atmospheric science.
i like ecology a lot. i took it last semester and it really interested me. what did you end up doing with your degree?

Sorry it took so long to reply. I kind of got caught up in other areas of the forum
On Weather Forecasting. Actually right now I am working in Radar Meteorology. However, I loved forecasting. Even though it can be frustrating at times because it isn’t an exact science and no matter how hard you try it’s impossible to be 100% right. No two situations are exactly the same but it isn’t hard to start seeing patterns.
Personality type. In one aspect this personality type is perfect for weather. You have to analyze the information and try to forecast which of those conflicting pieces of information is going to have the greatest affect. It really requires you to go inside your head and play with ideas. The down side is that there are a lot of NT’s in the field so you can tend to get lost.
Good Luck

I worked for the Forest Service for about 4 years. Ironically I was doing a lot of public education (guided field trips, etc.) work even though I'm traditionally terrible with people. I really enjoyed working as a forest ranger and consider it the best job that I've had. Government cutbacks suck!
I personally think that any type of career that involves a lot of environmental interaction could be good for an INTP. Nature changes daily and is never totally predictable so the boredom common in other jobs isn't as pronounced. Also if you get to do any type of field work, you get to spend large amounts of time alone.

Howdy, and welcome to the forum.
It is very good to read about all of these INTPs doing well with their lives. I makes me feel like this despirate underachiever can take off too. The natural sciences have always interested me a great deal, but I've never givin the time to delve into them :( . Enought blah blah. Welcome aboard.
