Apart from the usual survival rations of beans, white bread and Doll Noodles™, we've all done things to compensate for having no money. Personally I turned off the central heating and put on 2 pairs of jeans, 4 t-shirts, 2 shirts, 3 jerseys, a large jacket, wool beanie and gloves. - and slept wearing the same.

*cries at the mere suggestion of having to wear all that clothing ... and melts in the Sydney heat*

I lived in my car once, with no money. I slept in parking lots, and truck stops asking people for food, gas and cigarettes. I would always tell them I was lost and lived 100 miles away, and didn't have any gas to get home. Most people would atleast give me something, if nothing more than a cigarette. It was quite fun being a bum.

Really? I don't use my heating anyway, and I sleep in a t-shirt. You get used to the cold. And the 'survival rations' are my usual diet. When things get tough, it's rice pudding all the way. 25p for 625g, goes a long way.

Hmmm... I have a habit not to buy stuff. Which works out quite nicely.

When it got bad for me just after I moved and ran out of money I gave plasma twice a week ($40). I lived off nothing but that for about 2 months.

..things to do to get by...
Create a webpage and sell something on it so there is a trickle of income coming in from online buyers. Make a large pot of chicken vegetable soup at home and make it last for 3 days, or freeze leftovers in those gladware containers when you make a large pot.

Just get any job, don't be picky. Any job will be better than nothing in times like those.

ya mean like standing on the corner at night in a tight black dress with big hair, too much make-up and going through three cigarettes an hour waiting with a couple friends for a job? nah, never. but i did stay at a holiday inn express last night.

At the worst, I remember looking at a sack of sugar and a sack of flour in the pantry and calling my dad (the cook in the family) to ask if the were any recipes for something sweet that I could make without also making a purchase. IIRC, the sugar cookies were a welcome respite.

It's so much harder to live off of anything here than in Mexico...like...you can steal guavas from your neighbor without going to jail...or just go to your local mercado and have a great lunch (ask for a taste of everything, most people give you one).

Here in the US they give you free stuff...but...it's mostly useless...although that Organic Magazine thing I asked for isn't so bad...recycled paper.

:D

I took a cold shower in shorts and a polo shirt and sat in front of the fan when it got too hot. (I was in Puerto Rico at the time)
