View Full Version : Silliness of "performance reviews"

So, I unexpectedly get my perf review emailed to me today by my boss. Nothing surprising in there at all, got generally "as expected" with a few below/above expectations.

One thing that has always irked me about my jobs (except one or two) is how ridiculously anal managers and companies are about "time." My co has hours from 8:30 to 5:30. I generally come in at 9 and leave at 5. I get my work done every day. In fact, my job really only takes about an hour's worth of effort per day, if that. Yet, my boss has such a hard-on about me not taking "company policy" seriously. I realize many people think I'm just a lazy ass, but my point is this: if I'm getting my job done and doing it well, then what does it matter what hours I work? I am an editor who manages a web site. No one else besides frelancers work with/for me. I can literally do my job from home, in bed, if I was allowed to. Since I started a year ago, our site traffic has literally doubled. Yet, I catch shit about not adhering to company policy....

So, I see how much of a "raise" I get today. Although, honestly I couldn't care less. I'm starting my own biz and can't wait to be able to quit. Besides, 3% or whatever means nothing to me. :dieemo:

Yeah that would make me nuts. My job is quite mundane lab work but I don't hate it because I come in when I want and leave when I want. Not having to adhere to a particular schedule is a huge factor in my happiness.
A lot of companies have flex time these days, maybe you could look for another job with such attributes?

Oh, I am: my own company. :) Half way there....

Same here. No time clocks in sight.
I need that flexibility or I get unhappy.
Fortunately, I have a good enough reputation that my fuzzy punctuality isn't a huge deal.

Americans work too many hours anyway. I'd have no problem with a worker working 9-5 if I were a boss if that person got his work done.

Yeah...you know you get your work done and do it well but that doesn't fit into an SJ mentality...I would suggest keeping up appearances of adhering to company policy even if it is inane...that's how they like it and they aren't going to change...

I have always strongly agreed with this. I've seen too many jack offs screw around all day and then look like their busting ass, because they stay late to rob the company of overtime pay. You get all your work done on time, leave on time, and youre not a team player as a result. It happens way too often.

In the end though, if you can get away with it, why not?

Eventually you would be exposed, but if you dont care, go for it.

company police doesnt care about employees but only about the company. This is and always is hard too understand. In the end only the top level executives have a limited freedom and a large paycheck. Companies are so huge that nobody cares but overworked managers who take there frustration out on you. Go talk to someone at your personell department and make a complaint. Ehh you do have a personell department right???Anyway i dont really care im uberloser former yuppy turned hippy etc. Too bad that creative people like you are turned into workhorses. Motivation is the key to inspiration. Off the 8 hours you work 60-80% is spent on useless crapper etc etc etc.
