Yes, they're a lot cheaper than buying new books but you get some extra surprises...... such as turning to page 207 and seeing a long, dark pubic hair sitting on the page.
I probably have Gonoherpesyphillis now :(

I don't know about you but all pubic hair I've ever seen looks much different from the hair on one's head.
Could've been a beard hair. They seem to be remarkably like pubes.

ah, that would be a sufficient deterrent for me from buying a used textbook for a while now. ew, pubic hair... *makes a face*
What you do is, while in the bookstore, shake the book out vigorously before quickly flipping through all the pages for a last minute checkup, then ask the cashier if they have a policy for potentially violated books.

I don't know... some people just have bad hair (on their heads)... LIke "X", who I sit behind in biology... "X"'s whole head of hair could be mistaken for somebody's pubes.

I buy my books new because I like to keep them if at all possible, but also because I (at least in the past) had the luxury of having my books paid for.
Some of the books I've had to use really sucked though. Really, really sucked. These books aren't worth even buying used.

Nothing beats finding out that a book you purchased in a procrastinator's panic was lovingly harboring a huge bed of dried vomit, invisible from the outside. Way to check the books before reselling them, assholes.

Hopefully it was a class you hated. I know that I HATE the class this book is for.... I almost want to change my major just because I hate it so much. Later on in the semester I have to interview a legislator and write a big ass paper about it. I don't want to talk to a fucking legislator, much less write a paper about what he says. Why in the goddamn hell didn't I stick with computer science? It's too late now for me to change things up... I"m just going to have to suffer through it.... one miserable week at a time. It'll all be over in May.

Haha, I see that all the time, but whats worse was a second hand copy of the Republic I had with profound comments added in such as "Thrasymicus should give Socrates a slap"...

I'm sorry, the word "the" is not worthy of highlighting.

L...O...L!!!!!
It really is amazing to see what other people mark/highlight in used books. It does wonders for my self-esteem to see how dumb most people are

Not the most upsetting to me as the book was not that important, but some person felt it was necessary to take notes in the margin, highlight those notes, rehighlight those notes in a different color, and then place an astericks next to everything.
It really warrants the whole "destruction of intellectual material" campaign when they write incorrect assertions about a section they just highlighted and then highlight those, ensuring that they don't forget the wrong information for the test.

I love buying used textbooks, especially accounting for they sometimes contain solutions on most problems. Also, the notes, highlights represent the previous owner's attempt to conquer the subject matter. I like that.

Text books are expensive and they rip you off at buy back time, so...why not get your money's worth? Or perhaps you're upset because you wanted to be the first? It's widely assumed that all used text books have been humped at some point.
