so I've been trying to install linux for the past hour..
then I realized I should be doing cfdisk /dev/hde instead of /dev/hde1 .. (total linux noob..)
anyway.. so for some reason the devices start with my cdrom at hda.. then ends with a hard drive on hdg. now.. originally I thought hde must be the one I need to format. but now logic says that maybe I should've formatted hdg(I wanted to format the master which would normally start hda but maybe somehow the logic was reversed so it went hdg - hda ) .. now I lost backup data, big deal.. right.. but I ripped 25GB+ of my own CD's on that backup drive.. now if I re-rip I'll probably do it with OGG but hopefully I don't have to, it will take weeks to get back to where I started.
so.. thoughts? did I lose my backup data?

also, that was the first time I had ever partitioned a harddrive.. and the hard drives I have are identical...

The data should still actually be on the disk. Well, atleast if it was windows, it would be...unless you did some kind of overwrite.

Had a similar problem once. First thing we did was ghost the drive. Ghosting replicates the drive, byte by byte, ignoring pointers and stuff. Funny thing is, it actually copies damaged areas on the disk too!!! Then we ran through a series of Demo recovery software. Ended up recovering about 85% of the lost data.

Products like this should be able to help. Not sure if this specific one has a demo, but others do. http://www.stellarinfo.com/

nah, recovering isn't that big of a deal, I did mkfs.ext2 on it a few times so I'm pretty sure it's gone..

I use an external USB 2.0 hard disk as my backup, automated. External is important for situations just like this :(

I got it working, yay for mouseconfig and cluelessness. now I need to connect to the network. I got ahold of the network guy but I am not sure what I am supposed to do since I think I'm supposed to have a specific IP.. and.. I tried netconfig since I _think_ that's what I'm supposed to do.. but I don't know argh..

I have been doing ...
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up
..
that was after running netconfig and setting it to DHCP.. I was able to ping the router.
I will look through those conf's..

/etc/resolv.conf contains
search 255.255.255.0

/etc/nsswitch.conf contains
... a bunch of stuff.. eg,
hosts: files dns
network: files
etc.

inet addr: 10.100.0.134
Bcast: 10.255.255.255

so wtf am I supposed to do? I know 0 about networks/networking.
what would my nameserver be? the same as the router IP ?
in mozilla when I try to go to a site it looks like it is resolving then after a few moments it tells me it fails.. when I enter an IP it fails immediately.
my angst/sadness is really high right now :(
