usually 7-10. If I wasn't on St. John's Wort that might be a different story though...
also...
normally, I will wake up an hour later each day.. for example..
Monday - 8am
Tuesday - 9am
Wednesday - 10am
so on and so forth...it's not precise but there are weeks where I am awake during the day then there are weeks where I am awake only at night.

2 - 4 hours at the moment. I really need about 10 in order to properly relax. I'm going to see a GP about it on Monday.

4-6 Unless I'm shitfaced...
Then it's more like 8.
I have a horrible time falling to sleep.
Usually try to go to bed before 1, but I'm rarely tired. Still looking at the clock at 3am. Wake up about 7:30.

I'm usually in bed for 8-9 hours, but the time I am asleep is probably only about 5-6 on a given night, unless it is a weekend. My problem is that if I know I have to wake up at a certain time (Mon-Fri), I always seem to wake up a few hours before and can't go back to sleep. I think my alarm has only gone off a dozen times in the last few years. When it does, it scares the shit out of me and I feel like I am about to have a heart attack. I also wish I could just fall asleep and sleep for 8 hours straight but that hasn't happened since high school.

I need 7-9 hours to feel normal, but it takes me two hours to sleep. So I stay up until I'm nodding in my chair then sleep for 4 hours, go to work, feel like zombie dreaming of a nap, get home, and am awake by the time work is over so I don't take a nap. Repeat. Until the weekend where I sleep for 12 hours to make it up.. It still takes me a while to pass out, but I have the luxury of sleeping in. I have a problem falling asleep not staying asleep.

Funny you started this topic. I have hardly slept for about a week. I keep my hopes up for the weekend... :(

I haven't needed an alarm clock in several years. Couldn't find one with a tone/beep/buzz that wasn't totally annoying, and so subconsciously programmed myself to wake up 10 minutes before any time I had to wake up. Now I just tell myself when I need to be up before I go to sleep. It's not that difficult to do. If I could find a way to tell myself I don't have to go to school on a weekend though, it would be nice.

I'm pretty good at setting the internal clock to wake me up, too. But on important occassions I do use back up.
Since high school I've had timers used to turn on my stereo for an alarm. Most alrams sound so awful. How could you not have a miserable day starting out like that? Even the cheaper clock radios have cd players now. So much better listening to a song you enjoy first thing in the morning. The radio as an alarm is a step up from alarms but you never know if you're going to get music or some annoying jackass ringing a cow bell or popping a whoopi cushion, talking about spilling starbucks on his privates while driving past a Victoria Secret billboard. "oh yeah, stop you're killing me. ha ha. Now why don't you and your circus clown loafers find something better to do?'

Right now, I'm in the six to seven hour range. Guilt prevents me from going past eight though. If I get swamped on deadline, it'll drop down to as few as 4 1/2 hours. As long as I can remain asleep between 4:30 AM and 8:30 AM I'm fine. I'd do better on four hours sleep during those times than going to bed at 11 PM and having to get up at 7 the next morning.

I got a radio/clock that does white noises like rain and wind. I currently wake up to waves crashing on a beach.

Stap me, but that's cool. Any chance of you providing a link to the maker or from where one might import such a device ? I love those sounds --- also I can't sleep with a ticking watch, let alone a ticking clock: so options are rather limited; the only real good thing with a mobile phone is that's it's handy for telling the time, and silent with it.

so far, looks like we've some fairly healthy sleepers. That also tells me my habits and attitude wouldn't change much if I did sleep like I should.
Heh, I've been awake now for 38 hours, and I'm starting to catch a second wind.
I think I'll go to sleep though, and wake up at 5 a.m. to work on some programs.

I want to be sleeping right now but I'm not.
my sleep patterns are irregular. i work at 5:30am three days a week (occasionally 4 and on the other days i don't have off, the time i come into work changes due to flexible scheduling), and no matter how hard i try, i CANNOT go to bed before 11pm-midnight. therefore i don't get enough sleep. when there's a lot on my mind, i don't sleep much at all b/c i can't stop thinking.

I ended up sleeping from 11am to about 2pm today (stayed up all night) ...
Sleep from about 11:30 to 6am - have to have tv on or radio on to sleep.
I'm the same ... I leave CD's on random & repeat all, or make a playlist on my computer to sleep to. Other nights I'll sleep with the tv on, but if I don't just put a DVD on, I end up flicking channels aimlessly way into the morning with nothing good ever being on.

This is the exact one I have:
http://www.homedics.com/prod/detail.aspx?ID=36
It is available at amazon.com for $13 (U.S.), but does not seem available at amazon.co.uk
People on amazon have had some bad experiences with it, I have not. I've had mine now for 3-4 years. It is pretty cheap, there are probably better ones out there. This gets the job done for me, I've learned to grab it and hit the off button and I don't use the radio anyway.
Something similar should not be too hard to find.
I ended up writing a review on amazon.com!

I put 6-8 hours because when I'm fuctioning "normally" (I haven't for I don't know how long, but it's a nice thought) that's about how much I get, but currently I'm on downers (yay woman who's supposed to be a doctor but really isn't who gave me an entire bottle!) so I've been sleeping more than my ancient, obese, arthritic dog (we're talking over 15 out of 17 hours between a bus ride in the rain with a brief break to get into a car, go home, take a shower, swallow a bunch of pills my mother gave me, and dump everything that was on my bed into the floor). I'm really not too sure how I'm going to go to school on Monday without falling asleep or dying (I was sent home Wednesday and Thursday by two different teachers, then Friday I was on a field trip that I mostly slept through, so it will be a major adjustment), but I'm pretty sure my chem teacher will let me sleep on a table so I can compete that night.
I've also been known to stay up all night reading text books which I quote religiously the next day, but that's been a while ago...
EDIT: Post 200. Never thought I'd get that many...

I guess it depends on my work schedule. My internal clock doesn't quite line up with my work schedule so I don't get enough sleep as I should. Monday - Friday, I'll get about 4-6 hours a night since I can't get to sleep until after midnight and have to get up at between 5:30 and 6am. On the weekends when I can be on a schedule that feels more natural, I'll go to bed around 2am and sleep in until 10 or 11 am.

I only get about 3-4 hours of "real" sleep every night. The rest of the time is spent laying in bed, awake. This can't be good for my attempt at gaining muscle...

It depends. I often get very interested in things during the night. Between 10 PM and 5 AM is golden time for me, because I know nobody will come over or call me. It's my thinking/reading/researching time. So, if I'm really into something, I'll get like 3 hours of sleep. Generally, around 5 or 6. And then on my one day off a week, about 10, lol.

During the school year I usually get 6-7 hours of sleep, except on weekends when I wake up a couple of hours later than during the week. During the summer I've noticed I have phases, like most of May and all of June I would usually go to bed at 6:00 am and wake up at 2:00 or so. July gradually got better and now I go to bed between around 3:00 and wake up around noon.
