Default Can anyone suggest a good introductory music theory and piano primer?

I'd like to begin studying music theory and piano, so I thought I'd ask around to see if any particular primer has worked exceptionally well for other INTPs. Comments from instructors would be particularly helpful, but anything students have to add would be welcome as well.

I know a few people that have worked on this:

hanon

It's pretty simple once you learn the exercises, and they're all in one key. I think it's mainly to get your hand strength and precision up. In other words, it's not gonna teach you theory.

A big thing about any instrument is that you have to invest a lot of calm, boring (let's say "meditative" and be optimistic) time into adjust your body to a new physicality. Hanon is probably a very good way of doing that for piano.

You can find lots of easy music/chord/jazz/classical/pop theory online for free.

As far as reading music, work through some children's melodies at first:

kid's songs

The reason being, you know how they sound. If you work through them with something like this open to the side, you can start to see how sheet music works.

After that, move on to learning some simple versions of pop songs you know.

I don't know what you mean by primer, but Gordon's Music Learning Theory is legit.

I'm not a musician myself, but am told that Paul Hindemith's book on harmony is excellent.
